All the way back to at least the 308GT4 the the Ferrari service manuals say to never retension the belts. The belt fibers are Kevlar or something very similar. The fibers do not stretch as tension is increased up to their yield point. This was discussed extensively in earlier threads. The consensus was to follow the factory recommendation. (Search the archives) Do not assume that all belts are similar, the belt's tooth design can result in different amounts of break-in wear. The very low profile flat teeth on the Ferrari 3x8 belts would tend to have very little break-in wear in the cross-belt axis.

Here is a question that has been in the back of my mind for some time. I have another vehicle that has a timing belt. The service personnel recommend retensioning the belt after 1500 miles. So once it streaches initially, it won't happen again. But.....the Ferrari 328/308 manual says just the opposite. It says one should not retension the belts once initially tensioned. I assume the belts are similar. What's the story here? |
