The generator light will not go out on most Bosch alternators until you rev the engine to around 2000 rpms. This is normal. The exhaust whistle is from the insulation inside the exhaust tips burning out. There have been various cures suggested but I fixed mine by rolling a piece of sheet metal into a cylinder and pressing [hitting it with a hammer] it into the tips. |

Hi Kelly and Edward. What causes the exhaust whistle? Is this normal for this model? I am also noticing that the generator light doesn't go out right away, but the belt seems tight. I will try to check that this weekend. |

John hi this is Kelly, remeber we both have the same car. I tell you this, if you have not been driving your car hard, like never reving it over 5,000 rpm, then the noise is normal. For almost a year I was sort of scared to rev. But since it looks like I knew what I was doing when I did my own 30K, there are all kinds of noises goin' on back there that I think are natural, I've just had never reved it up that high. Also, Edward may be right I know I have the exhaust whistle Hope you are enjoying your car, kelly |

Could be a bearing like A/C, idler pulley, etc. Hopefully not a tensioner bearing. Dave |

Thanks Brett, it probably is, but it sounds more metallic sounding. |

I have a 1980 GTSi that is making a high pitched squeal upon moderate to hard acceleration. It seems to be most prominate when the engine is cool. No sounds during idle or low acceleration. Any ideas??? |
