Dapper: My eyesight up close isn't good enough, my hand isn't steady enough, I don't have a soldering tool small enough, I don't have any testing tools for that kind of work, and I don't have a schematic - so I'm leaving it alone. Someone like my brother, who does electronic work, or someone like you, could probably make some sense of it and locate and repair an internal problem. Someone like me, strictly a wrench mechanic, would be LOST in there. It's very easy to remove the A/C control box and open it up. I understand that new boxes are almost impossible to obtain and very, very expensive. For now, I'm leaving it alone. |

Jeff B, that looks a doddle to me with the correct rated and sized iron. In fact seeing those pics has made me more relaxed about the job if I have to go that far in future |

All 348's should be rewired! They are a bowl of wheeping spagetti. Only Ferrari could do wiring this way. I absolutely could not do a worse wire job and I don't know s*&^T |

Was lurking on this...and wondering if that stuff Stabilant 22 would be helpful to apply to all the various connections on those boards?

Just in case anyone thinks it would be easy to resolder the A/C control, this is a sample of what you will find inside. On mine, the clock readout goes blank when you turn the headlights on. I thought MAYBE I could see the problem on the circuit board. This is 1000x my limited capability to resolder anything. I'd much rather have a problem with my clock then accidentally melt the entire board! |

I had the panel go blank, checked the 30A fuse, it was not blown, refitted the exact same fuse and the panel worked. My view is that panel can go into dormant OFF mode in event of probably numerous internally sensed problems (in my case it was v'low voltage - I let the battery go down) May be worth whipping the A/C plant control panel out (apparently quite easy to do) and then 'resolder all internal junctions' fix discussed elsewhere here |

Thanks JRV- I was concerned. What do you think about this idea? What if I was to relocate the fuse to the other side of the engine compartment? I could put it over by the other fuse panel that is readily accessable. Have you ever done this? It is a pain in the a$$ to get to it in it's current location. |

IME those fuses blowing is fairly common. Mods are neccesary to the circuits. |

Are the archives working? I did a serch but no hits. I'm sure this has been discussed before in some venue. Anyway. My ac control panel has gone dark TWICE now, in my 89 348. First time it happened while I was picking the car up at Norwoods'. Ken, there found a blown fuse, (30 amp), and tested the draw. He fond no more than 20 amp draw under max load, (ie ac on and fan full up). So he just replaced the fuse and I took the car home, everything worked fine. I've driven the car lass than 300 additional miles and the panel went dark again. Immedeitately I checked the same fuse- blown. I installed a new fuse- works again. I think to replace the fuse after it has been in for 13 years once- ok. Now that it has failed again, I'd say there's a high probability that there's something wrong in the system. Has anyone else had this problem? I believe the fuse I'm referring to is the 30 amp "ac system protection fuse". It is located under the front trunk carpeting. Next to the 4 relay panel on the PASSENGER SIDE. The entire piece of carpet must be removed to access it. Any help would be appreciated. J |
