Steve, Ric's right on: both sides. BTW: Loctite/Permatex does make a grey RTV especially for coolant sealing applications: "PERMATEX Water Pump & Thermostat RTV Silicone GasketMaker" http://www.permatex.com/auto/autouh.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=22071 - Allegedly optimized for better sealing of/resistance to water/coolant mix than their other RTVs (Super Blue, Black...) which are optimized for resisting petroleum based fluids (oil, gas). I used it when I rebuilt my water pump. Probably is overkill, but for a couple of bucks... BTW, I generally use the Ultra Black. As good as the Ultra Blue, & nowhere near as noticeable. Switched to it after I put a blue thumbprint in the middle of my newly wrinkle painted cam cover. Ended up stripping & repainting as it got down into the wrinkles. Black wouldn't have been visable after wiping it off. |

I use a thin film on both surfaces of the gasket, to help it seal. |

OK about ready to mount my rebuilt WP and although I usually use blue rtv form a gasket on other applications , is there something I should be doing different? I usually put a thin film on the WP and set the gasket. But being alum. should I put a thin coat on the base also? Thoughts here? Thanks |
