I am an outstanding driver, but only a so-so mechanic.

Any Ferrari is loud.

How does one tell if the engine is knocking especially if just a minor amount?

Read the owner's manual; use what it says.

With the relatively low compression of the 348 engine, 87 ought to work just fine. If you get knock, move up to the next lowest available in your area. Buying too high an octane gas will just waste money; it won't do anything for the car unless you remap your fuel injection and timing.

348's (3.4L equipped series) don't have 'knock sensors. So are not equipped to adjust for poor fuel, per se. However the compression is relatively mild and likely won't detonate on any pump gas availible in cities in the US.

I pick up the car and the owners manual on Friday so have no idea what it says.

For performance driving, it will always have 93 (if available) - the number that is on US pumps which is a combination of two numbers.

However, for "normal" use can the 348 engine in the Mondial t safely run on 91 or 87. Limited reading suggests that the Mondial t can safely run on fuel as low as 87. Limited reading suggests that the electronics in the car adjust the engine for the octane in use, hence the car can safely run on fuel as low as 87.

Is this true?

I think Peter P. has the right idea and definately the best Ferrari Attitude!

;-)

ps: hope you other guys find an answer before you run out of gas, that is if you're still driving with so much uncertinty swirling around.

Regarding the comment:

"it seems that the car is best to run on 93. If it is too high like 110, it can ruin the engine"

Octane rating refers only to a fuel's ability to resist combustion knock. 110 octance number fuel cannot ruin an engine due to its octane rating alone. The means by which the high resistance to knock is achieved may cause problems. For example, I can build a 110 RON (research octane number) hydrocarbon fuel that will perform wonderfully in any engine without any modifications or adjustments. On the other hand, I can build a 110 RON fuel that contains oxygenated hydrocarbons for the octane boost that would require significant adjustments to the fuel delivery system (air/fuel ratio adjustment). Without the adjustments, the engine could be damaged if it could run on the blend, but not because of the octane rating. Again, octane rating, per se, does not hurt motors. Too much octane can only hurt the fuel budget. There is no benefit to using a fuel with an octane rating higher than the engine needs. I use the lowest octane rating gasoline that resists serious engine knock (listening for knock while subjecting the engine to high gear, low speed, wide open throttle acceleration for very short periods is a reasonable way to evaluate the appropriateness of a particular fuel).

Dave -- two things:

1. To discuss the octane numbers you've really got to clarify if they are RON-based or AKI-based or "something else"-based numbers (From my limited experience the US numbers on the gas pumps are AKI-based, but the European pumps are labeled with RON values so in our mixed forum a simple number isn't really enough to define it and can add to the confusion. The F manuals -- even US models -- tend to use RON values).

2. I'd put the most weight on what's listed in the corresponding Owner's Manual for the Mondial t you're interested in -- do you know what's listed there?

At first I ran a search on gas, but came up with too many hits that did not pertain.

Reading back throuogh many posts, it seems that the car is best to run on 93. If it is too high like 110, it can ruin the engine.

The engine can self adjust to lower octaine down to 87 so the engine is not damaged.

Do I understand correctly?

Thanks, Dave

I use Sunoco "Ultra" 94 Octane. I'm not positive that it works better than 93 octane avilable elsewhere, but at least it costs more.

Dave -- Do a search on "RON MON" (AND mode, whole words only) -- then restate question if necessary.

I'd say the best gas to use is the highest octane thats available and realistically priced. In Los Angeles, right now 91 Octane is the highest we can get at the local pump. I paid 2.03 a gallon yesterday. You can get 103 octane for about 5.50 a gallon, and the car drives alot better, but it is just to expensive.

What is the best fuel to use for a Mondial t with the same engine as the 348?

Some have said that it would run just fine on 87.

Others have said to use 91.

Still others have said to use 93.

What is best and why?

Thanks.
