Speaking of NGK plugs... here's a good place to buy them. They charge about 1/2 of what my local auto parts store sells them for and they ship for free.

David, that is interesting. What is your elevation there in Seattle--pretty close to sea level, right? I believe altitude was a factor in FoD's recommendation.

Help me through this here--at higher altitudes, two things are going on... One, there is a tendency to run rich: deliver the same amount of fuel for the same volume of air but with less oxygen, unless you change your jets. Also at higher altitude, cylinder temperatures will tend to be less, since there is less combustion (due to less oxygen) in a given cylinder. Tendency to run rich, foul plugs, and with lower cylinder temperatures.

So, a hotter plug will help combat fouling (from running rich). At the same time, a hotter plug won't remove as much heat from the clinders, which is ok in my case, since I have less heat to remove?

Sounds like I should be running a hotter plug, doesn't it? Do I have this right?

Interesting Mike. I did a bit of research too, and found the NGK 6's to be the preferred plug(when I had a 78 308 GTS), which is one heat range hotter than you are using. I tried 7's and found them to be fouling, and developed a slight miss. The 6's seem to work a bit better and were strongly recommended by the local shops here in the NW. It is interesting further, that 5's are now recommended, which is hotter still, but those that have used them seem to find that they work well.

Seems the injected cars with the more precise fuel metering work just fine with the stock heat range plugs. I'm using D8EVX's in my current 328.

I'm running NGK BP7EVXes. Previous owners ran BP6ESes. (78 308 GTS at 5000ft.) Am pleased with them, but it's also possible that there's a better plug out there. BP7EVXes were the "best practice" I saw from FerrariChat, Ferrari of Denver, and some other research.

I liked the NGK's so much, i put them in my Ford F150. I used the Iriduim Plugs.

My 2 cents

Used NGK BP5ES for all 308 2v carb motors for 20yrs. You don't need the EVX plugs unless you have injection and the electronic ignition that goes with it. Gap at .027, be sure to put a small amount of anti-seize on the threads, and get your ohm-meter out and check for resistance in the wires and plug extensions.

A recent Forza article recommends NGK BP5ES. Hotter=better in 308s, according to Forza's Tony Palladino.

I switched my own '76 over to the BP5ESes when I read that, and they do seem to be staying much cleaner than the BP6ESes or Champion 2415s I'd run in the past. Thumbs up on the BP5ESes from me.

Actually, the "standard" copper core NGK's work fine too....Though I have been using the EVX's lately....but find little difference...

NGK BP7EVX are the ones I've used and other chatters on this site have talked about.

Another option would be the Champion RY6CC...but I like the NGK's better.

If you do a FC search on "Spark Plugs", you'll probably get about a dozen hits and lots of advice.
