hi peter,

thanks! vague is good enough. btw: On the '89 328, it's a 32mm socket.

It appears one problem may be the way the hose was tightened last time. Since the oil cooler is bolted to the frame, that end isn't moving. As the banjo bolt is tightened, the engine end wants to rotate clockwise with the bolt. The result in this case was the hose being stretched rather tightly between the engine and the oil cooler such that vibrations would want to pull the hose back in a counter-clockwise direction. The thing was self-loosening :-)

the oil drain plug on the '89 328 is different from the '81 308. It's a standard 17mm drain plug with an aluminum sealing washer. The placement of the plug is more standard...it pokes out sideways from the bottom of the pan.

The diameter of the drain plug is smaller than the 308, and the washer itself is "wider" (i.e. the amount of material between the inside and outside radius of the washer is greater...on the order of 2x).

I believe the last time I changed the washer I just got one at the local auto parts place. There has never been a copper washer on the car since I got it, though I don't know if that's original or not.

On my GT4, the copper washers are the same ones used for the engine and transmission drain plugs (remember, the 308's plugs. Surprisingly not confirmed yet, but, the 328 engine drain plug is smaller [?]).

As for tightening, I tightened it as tight as I could (sorry for the vagueness. I believe I used a socket and 18" breaker bar to TIGHTEN). No leaks yet...

anyone have the torque for the banjo fitting on the engine end of the oil line between the oil cooler and the rear of the engine on an '89 328?

the copper washer dimensions would be a bonus, though I'll probably just anneal the existing ones for now.

I've looked though the workshop manuals that I have with no luck.

thanks,
phil
