8 foot sounds about right Bret. Not enough to strip the nut.

I thought they were like 8 ft lbs on the 308QV. This is a shot in the dark though. I think Peter might know. If you call the local dealership they'll know for sure.

I don't have the torque specs but I would start in the middle and work outward toward both ends and outward toward top and bottom. I would only snug them down. When you do the entire cover in sequence by just snugging the nuts it has a better sealing effect.

I have also have a small leak. What are the nuts supposed to be torqued to? It's not listed in my manual.

Rob and Russ, Your valve cover nuts probably need torqueing down. They are probably seeping onto the exhaust headers.

First of all Russ I had the same problem with my 308. It was the water coolant pipe where it ran underneath the passenger seat floorboard. Look under there and you will see that there is not much clearance.

Mine smeels of burnt oil and even see whiffs of smoke sometimes. I believe it's just a few drops of oil getting on part of the exhaust system.

I stated this thread and have some new details. The rattle is loud and is directly related to bumps in the road. Just reving the engine at standstill does not create the rattle. It only occurs for about the first 20 miles after leaving an unheated garage where the overnight temperature was 40f or less. It is mostly on the right side of the car at a point where my first reaction was that it was the passenger side seatbelt banging around. After sitting in the sun-no problem.

Another datapoint. After short trips there is a smell from the engine compartment that is somewhat like burnt oil that had gotten on a manifold.

Any other thoughts?

Sounds like a problem I had with QV. Loud metalic rattle when car was cold that would go away as it warmed up. I suspected the A/C compressor, so the next time it did it, I turned on the A/C and the rattle got much worse. So, I cut off the belt and it stopped altogether. Mechanic says bearings are probably going bad and can be replaced. Have not done it yet. It's a while before hot weather.

I had the same problem, it was one of the exhaust heat sheilds from the forward bank header, down low, where it travels over a frame rail. I put the car on a lift and used a small pry bar to bend the offending sheild up a bit. No more rattle.

An odd problem in the 1988 328 that I just bought. When I leave my garage on a cold morning I get a sever rattling sound that comes from around the foreward part of the engine bay and sometimes sounds like it is around the overhead spoiler. It is not related to RPM because it rattles most when I go over a small bump and not when the car is at a standstill. Now after it has been parked in the sun in my office parking lot I start it up drive off and there is no rattle whatsoever. The rattle is loud enough so that it is hard to believe that it is related to the car haveing been in a cold garage all night with tolerances opening up because of metal contraction. It really sound like two lose part banging together. It also seems to come from bothe side of the engine compartment.

Anyone have some thoughts on this.

By the way this is afantastic forum.
