I think many use the direct fire system to replace the Marellis. It is around $1500 or so but I have been told it is worth it.
Richelson, I am sure that there is another way around it but I don't know of one off hand. I also have heard that when the digiplex boxes go that they are around $650 for used ones but I think they can be rebuild. Does anyone know if they can be rebuilt? Did they fix them on the QVs?

Thanks for the info Peter. That was exactly the info I was looking for. I knew I was forgetting something. I wasn't aware that the injected cars didn't have a mechanical advance I just assumed since our carb cars do that they do as well. I appreciate the info.

I should mention that those pics are of the advance mechanism in a 308 carb dist.

Richelson, the Digiplex's not only distribute spark, but calculate advance (using the engine-speed pick-up sending unit mounted on the bellhousing intermediate plate). I don't know of any of these aftermarket ignition systems (MSD, Crane, etc...) that can do this. Our carb distributors have mechanical advance. Hence only the need for a coil and a triggering mechanism (points or Dinoplex/XR700/MSD-6A/etc...).

I have Cranes so I understand how they work. The question was can they be installed in a QV/GTSi into the stock dist. and replace the Marellis? If so would it function properly. The stock injected cars don't have adjustable timing. The point was if need be to replace the Marelli ignition as the boxes have been known to malfunction. Anyone?

The Cranes only trigger the spark; you still need two coils and a rotating cap to send the spark to the appropriate plug

My objective was/is to keep the engine looking Italian while getting adjustable timing, and not having to set the timing twice every time. None of the 'distributorless' systems can be adjusted for the 45deg vee ('Tho Racetech in Calgary may announce one soon.)

I still think it can be done this way, but I'll probably adopt Ben M's solution to get the car on the road for the summer. See his post 'My own 308 distributor'.

Can a Crane XR700 replace a Marelli ignition? I have Cranes on my 308. They work very well. I was curious to know if they would work to replace the Marelli boxes?

I agree with Ed, I plan on changing mine over also on my 82 308gtbi euro. Did alot of checking and that Electromotive item is the way to go...

You would be better served by installing the distributorless ignition from Electromotive and not have to fool with distributors and cams. It probably would cost more but a lot more efficient and easier to adjust and install.

I'm removing the digiplex units from my 82 GTSi and installing a single distributor with two XR700s. But I need a way to drive the distributor. The existing system has only an extension fitted to the end of the cam with a rotor and cap on it.
Has anyone removed the extension to know if the socket is the same as the earlier distributor drive?

I presume that's how F. wd modify the earlier cams as it's easy and cheap. I DO know it's a b**** to remove the pin and shaft.

Tx for any help, and if this has been covered earlier, my apologies!
