Next time the speedo goes out, make sure it tells you where it's going. (And when it plans to come home)

Thanks, guys.

Sam- You're right on. This chat room is the only one I go to.

As far as my gauges, the speedo is the only one that is out. No mistake about it...I love my car and understand the "cost" of ownership. I just need to get to know her a little better.

You can remove the sending unit from the transmission and use an ohm meter connected to the two terminals to test the sender. You should have continuity across the terminals and the meter should jump rapidly when you turn the gear.If not, she's bad or intermittently bad.

any other guages go or just the speedo? Interesting, it seems the entire 308 "fleet" is aging and things are wearing out/breaking across the "fleet" at the somewhat the same time -- that is why this chat room is so damn valuable it let's us mange our cars as part of a "fleet" like a dealer or parts guy would.

Lots of previous discussion on this issue as it seems to be fairly common on 308's. I had the same experience - the day after I bought my car the speedo quit! (did the dealer know there was a problem? -probably, but he sure didn't tell me!) More often than not it's the sending unit which is about $100 for the part and less than an hour to replace. Let me know if you need help.

The day before purchasing my '81 308 GTSi, the last owner said the speedometer all of a sudden went dead (yeah, right). He proposed that I split the cost of fixing the speedometer. Enamoured by the car, I agreed to everything.

Before I drive to the nearest Ferrari dealership, how much work/$$ could this possibly be?

Randy
