The vinyl covered piece you speak of (between the instruments and the steering wheel) is held in place with three 7mm nuts. Believe me they can be very tricky to get to. You will first need to remove the instrument cluster, then the instrument cluster hood (held in place by 4 7mm nuts) It is only then that you will have access to the three 7mm nuts that hold the black vinyl piece you are interested in. Once those 3 nuts are removed, the piece may be hard to remove as it is often 'bonded' over time to the other vinyl. With regards to the instrument back. Take it out, remove the instruments and water sand the scratches out. Then take it to an annodising place and get it re-annodised. I did this and the whole job cost me all of $10 CDN that is like $6 American. |

Yea, david is right only 4 screws behind each of the four corner indicator lamps. use a magnetic screwdriver as they have said and then just pull carefully the center of the gauge panel. it will remove from the leather clad instrument housing and may bind due to age and a tight fit against the leather. Just remember where all the plugs for the cluster go when you remove them especially the corner indicators, (they easily get mixed up behind there when removed). let us know how you do. good luck and regards, Jim |

When you unscrew the four screws, is there anything else that is holding the cluster frame cover on? In other words, on the gauges, do they just stay in place and the frame cover can be removed without tinkering with the gauges per se? |

If you have trouble getting any of the indicator lights out, try slipping some dental floss behind their bezel and using that to pull them out. |

I have '82 GTSi also - remove steering wheel; pry out the four warning lights as earlier indicated, use magnetic screw driver if you can (disconnect battery first)to remove consol screws; cluster will then drop out fine, might want to mark all the wires as to what goes where. I did not not a complete removal,I just removed all bulbs, treated them and the dimmer rheostat with Stabilant-22 and re-assembled. Good luck! |

What holds the four indicator lights in place? One of mine is loose, and the previous owner wrapped electrical tape around it. Didn't work. |

It is anodized, but it can be painted just the same. I did mine using a textured spray and it came out nice. But I later decided I like the stainless look from the older 308's better, so I ordered one from Gentery Lane and replaced the black one. As Dave says Collin, if your car is a 308, it's as simple as removing the four screws from behind the indicator lights and then removing each of the five guages, the rheostat and the trip odometer reset. Not sure what you are referring to when you mention the "black vinyl in front"? But once you remove the cluster, most all of the removable dash pieces are bolted on with small hex nuts and easily taken apart.

If it is a 308, I believe it is anodized metal, not paint...but I could be wrong....remove the four indicator lights in each corner, behind you will find Philips screws. |

I am wanting to re-paint the instrument cluster piece black (mine's got a couple of scratches) along with replace the black vinyl that is in front of the cluster. Does anyone know how the cluster cover and vinyl come out? Thanks!! |
