Greg -- If you got thick black rubber carb-to manifold gaskets, I'd guess that they are aftermarket. Not that they wouldn't work OKish, but, as stacy o' said, the stock 103786 carb-to-manifold "gasket" is really more of a short ~5mm thick (thermal) spacer with gaskets on both faces. |

I too need new carb to intake manifold gaskets. (thick black ones, appear to be rubber) Let me know how making your own comes out. |

I found the best gasket scraper in the world. My old ice scraper for my windshield when I lived in Wisconsin. It has a plastic handle and a 4" brass blade. Easy on the metal and doesn't dull quickly like the plastic scrapers. And I almost threw it away thinking I would never use it in Florida... |

Peter allferrariparts.com has got the gasket set to do all 4 40dcnf's for $14.00. I presume this would include the gaskets you are looking for. They also list carburetor base gasket/spacer (part 103786) for $8.00 each. might be easier than making your own |

It you have to scrape them off, plastic windsheild ice scrapers are good for this. They wont scratch the metal like a spackle might. just make sure you dont get any bits of gasket into the intake. |

it should just come off the carb unless someone used gasket compound on the Carb to gasket surface. Getting the gasket off the fiber plate is another thing altogether. I had to soak mine in degreaser for a day and then carefully but forcefully scrape them off. |

Should I expect to scrape off the old gasket from the carbs, or should it come off with ease? I'll be doing this over the weekend. |

You can also buy Hylomar at your local Pep Boys and probably other auto parts stores. |

Hylomar is a brand name. I get mine at aircraft supply stores although Jaguar dealers should have it as well. Most people on FC seem to others brands of sealants, forget the names though. Any good joint compound will do the job. |

Gerrit....Great answer! Thank you...Is Hylomar the generic name of the sealant (I presume)? Can I ask for it by name? |

I cut my own, 1/32" thick paper type. You can use the fiber substrate as a guide for an Exacto knife. The tough part was getting the old gasket material off both sides of the fiber portion. When assembling, I used Hylomar to attach the gaskets to the fiber spacer. No Hylomar on the gasket to carb or manifold side. You'll need to make 8 of them of course. An alternative is to find a VW supplier, 40DCNF's are a popular upgrade on them. E.g. http://www.cbperformance.com/carbs.asp |

I will be replacing the base gaskets on the carbs on my '77 308. The factory parts are $49 a pop. Is there any problem in cutting my own gaskets? Is there a recommended material thickness / type that I should buy? |
