Catalitic converters.

I have the same problem and it could be one of two things.

1. there is a cover between the transaxle and the muffler cover, that cover sometimes hits the sensor that comes out of the cats. I removed the plate and added washers to raise it out of the way.

2. If your clutch cable has slack, it could be the cable hitting the frame of the car.

The alt. light is not on. Everything on the alt. is good and tight. I was wondering if the sound might be coming from a heat shield vibration perhaps, or something else. It's definitely a vibration of some part. Thanks, Steve.

My '82 GTSi does the same thing now and then, ever since I removed the exhaust shield and replaced the CATS with 'test pipes'....I believe its just loose sheet metal vibrating. Only at idle ot very low speeds, and hitting a bump makes it go away.

Remember, the alternator light is only on durring initial startup at low RPM which is an ideal time for rattles, vibration, chirps and all the other noises exclusive to these cars to come to light, but once operating temp is reached and idle is smooth most of these noises go away.

Collin -- Are you saying that at warm idle your alternator warning light is always "on" brightly? During your "check" did you remove the belt and give the alternator rotor/bearings a mechanical feel? Unfortunately, refreshing a 20 year old 308 alternator probably shouldn't be unexpected -- how many miles?

I get this clattering, chirping vibration sound only at idle, and it is related to the alternator because I only hear the sound when the alt. comes on. I have check the belt, mounts, and tension, and all look OK. Any ideas? It's quite an annoyance, and I sure would like to get it fixed! Thanks for your help
