Frank, ..I've seen belts break (strip teeth) because they were old, that likely had very little to do with TB's..but there is no excuse imo, for not changing tensioner bearings when changing belts. It's just not possible to second guess an old bearings continued life span, especialy on a high revving engine like a Ferrari.. |

>>>It is unreasonable to expenct Ferrari, SpA to have a matrix of driving environments vs. belt replacement schedule published to the ownership<< Rob, completely agree and no manufacturer has a sliding scale as such. I've never had a problem with the reccs....I do however have an ethical problem using Unreasonable FEAR of Impending Doom as a Service Motivator. Regards, JRV |

I was told by the service manager at FOA that the only cam belts he has seen break were on cars that had had the belts replaced a short time earlier due to tensioner bearing failure. |

I hear ya, JRV, I just spouted the company line, I cannot confirm nor deny this information personally. Last time I was in New Jersey for training, we got into this for 45 minutes with the Technical Director. And I do beleive that Ferrari can only, for simplicity and liability reasons, have only one standard. Then the decision rests with the owner and the repair facility or expert, like yourself. It is unreasonable to expenct Ferrari, SpA to have a matrix of driving environments vs. belt replacement schedule published to the ownership. I am certain they have this data for themselves though, and you have your own version, too. As stated, the debate continues... |

>>>or three years. <<< Rob, If the Factory really wanted to cover their own ass why not recomend changing them once a year?.....maybe because no one would believe them or fall for the pitch ? The debate is what seperates reality from The Factory Party Line of Think Speak. Under severe use such as multiple tracks days or drag racing every time one took their car out sure they'll need more attention to stress and wear items and more frequent belt changes than the average driver that sees moderate use, this only makes perfect sense. I don't blame Ferrari for trying to cover their own butts by reccomending services, however using FEAR Of IMPENDING DOOM as The Main Marketing Tool to drum up additional business is pretty low class imo.

WSM states every 30,000 miles (50,000 km) or three years. The debate continues... |

At 5500 miles you have nothing to worry about unless you only race it. The time factor comes from trying to predict the unknown...nobody knows if it's 5 years or 5 years and another 5 years that they might break, depends on a whole slew of different factors and conditions, so to insure an owner doesn't have a catastrophic belt failure based on reasonable use assumptions, the 5 year time frame is a reasonable pick. I just pulled an original set of belts off an 86 328 withh 26K miles...they didn't break...maybe they would have in one more mile or one more day, or maybe they would have broken 1 or 5 years ago under different use circumstances....who knows or cares...important point is they were replaced in time to avoid breaking and the consequences....sa la vi...life goes on. |

Does anyone known when the 360 needs to have the cambelts changed.....I've read 3 years/30,000 miles, and I've also seen 5 years.....My car was 3 years old last week (happy birthday sweetheart :-), I've only got 5500 miles on her, do I really need to change these already. Any Idea how much it costs? I know it's a lot cheaper than a 355 (due to access from the interior).....Is it possible to look at them and decide if they need to be replaced |
