BMW had major problems in their E36 3 series when they used plastic impellers. The water pumps would break right at 50K miles like clock work. Mine went at 50,300 miles (I had an appointment later that week to have the water pump replaced) |

For what it's worth. I bought a new water pump from Maranello Auto Parts and yes, it too came with a plastic impeller. I've had it on my car for 1 1/2 years without any problems. I was told it is lighter and less load on the bearings. (because I too had the same "cheesy" concerns) No problems though.

I'll try to get a pic. I don't own a digital camera, so I'll see if I can borrow one. There was a thread a month or two ago about the different variations of pumps. It seems the last one produced is the plastic impellor type. Don't know if it is a bad attempt at cost cutting, or if they thought this is an improvement. |

Hans, is it possible for you to post a pic of this one. I have heard of them, and have yet to see one yet. So many things ar produced in the new plastics. I recently discovered my Radiator (not on an F-car) was capped with plastic tanks. Unfortunately, with a bit of age, it has become fragile (drain fitting failed) |

The real question is: Should I? Or is there a legitimate reason for the plastic one? |

The brass one should fit, but check the fit/clearances with it first before a permanent installation...

I just bought a new 'big bearing' 328 type water pump. It came with a plastic impeller. Looks real cheesy. Should I re-use my metal one from my old pump? (Old pump is original from a 1975 308GT4.) |
