Great that you could solve your problem with a change of oil ! It's sometimes the obvious that we overlook. But, low/old oil will affect the synchro cones as in my previous post, causing the selection problem. Shows how important it is to change ALL fluids when you buy a used Ferrari !

I just changed the gearbox/differential oil today and that has seemed to fix it. I took it for a test drive and could not believe the difference it made, so smooth. I believe the stuff hadn't been changed in about 10 years and was 2 quarts low and pure black.
If anyone wants to try it that Mobil 1 synthetic stuff is great! It ran like a dream.

Reminds me of my days with an MGTF. Could only select reverse after selecting first. Your problem could be the syncro rings or in the case of Ferrari, the syncro cones (Ferrari use same syncro system as Porsche, beleive even most of the syncro parts are interchangeable !). Even though reverse is not syncronised, if the forward gear synchro's are worn, then there is tourque transfer to the gears thus spinning the reverse gear set making clean gear selection hard. Try Herbs trick and then check out your clutch alignment and from there the syncro.Could also be bearing problem related. Don't be scared - it's only money !

I always shift into first before reverse since reverse is not syncronized.

I agree Steve, You can't quickly put it into reverse at any given time. I push the clutch completely to the floor until I feel it bottom out and then slowly move into reverse.

Scott -- the problem is that the clutch shaft is not completely "disengaging" from the crankshaft. Either:

1) the clutch linkage is out of adjustment so even though you've got "the clutch (pedal) pressed to the floor" some torque is still being transmitted via the clutch disc, or

2) the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft is starting to get "sticky" and is transmitting some torque from the crankshaft to the clutch shaft even though the clutch disc is completely disengaged.

Try an experiment -- At stop, from neutral (clutch pedal depressed), select a forward gear (like 1st, which will stop the clutch shaft from rotating) and then quickly move the shift lever into reverse. If it still grinds horribly, then you've bigger problems (but if you did have a big problem I'd think that you'd be having difficulty selecting the forward gears at stop too).

My 82' 308GTSi ran great today until I tried putting her into reverse. It happens every time when I try to put it into reverse, even with the clutch pressed to the floor it still grinds.
It grinds really bad to be exact. What is it? Is my clutch gone? Please help anybody.
