James: Yes, there are a few of those......I don't want to say "us", because I feel that you and I understand the situation, while there will ALWAYS be those that don't.

James: Isn't it amazing, that no matter how much one tries to inform people, there will be someone paying the most, to be the first on the block, with almost ANY new model of ANY new car?

It seems that we will NEVER learn!!!!!!!!!!

We have seen this time and time again.....people loosing their hard earned money.......only to see it happen time and time AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do recommend that same advice to all my clients. It is nice to own the first but better to own the last. The best 328 ever built was the last in production. and the same goes for all ferraris. every year they make improvements to the cars so the last has to be the best
Also, with the low production of ferrari, it takes them a little longer to notice a problem, find a solution, and then rectify the production. By then customers have the cars, and they have to deal with the problems at the dealer/customer level to make the customers satisfied.

I am convinced. I will NEVER buy the first year model of a Ferrari.

well, I believe that has changed with the newer models, whats coming out of maranello is a much better product. I think they have learned by their mistakes.

James: It was always true that one "NEVER buys the first year model of a new Corvette".

It now seems to apply to Ferrai also!!!!!!! Now the owners of early 348's will have to take an additional monetary beating, when selling their cars. And THESE where the first on their block in buying the car, paying the MOST for it.

Truly a shame!

Henry,
I do agree and it is quite unfair, but that as they say is water under the bridge, and the cars are too old for any type of warranty.
No excuse, but those were tough times for ferrari with the new model, new engine/chassis designs and the founder of the mark passing just at its debut.

James: I can only feel sorry for the 348 owners, who now have to spend that kind of money, just to get their cars right.

Henry,
Recall is a very bad word to a manufacturer of any car and there have to be a number of complaints for that to happen (ferrari 348 production was very low compared to other vehicles in its class), Also the alternator issue with the 348 was not safety related which further made it less likely to go the way of recall.
The upgrade not only addresses the issue of the poor delco alternator {which could not take the rpm nor the harmonics the 348 engine produced), but also addresses the cooling of the alternator and improved grounding of the system with much better electrical connections.
Delco is a fine product, but in the 348 application, it was not enough.
Just a note though FNA did help customers with severe issues at that time with the upgrade.

Thanks and regards, Jim

James: What was wrong with the old system? It would seem that if it was that bad, ALL the cars would have been recalled to have the updated system installed, by the dealer, at no cost to the owner.

If there was no recall, then why?

I am NOT trying to ruffle anyones feathers, just curious!!!!!!

The kits are more than just brackets. it is actually a complete upgrade to the new system the factory installed on all the newer 348s. With the rear kit you get the addition of a battery switch instead of the nasty old power plug and all new ground cables. it is well worth the cost of the kit for any delco 348 owner and I highly recommend it. (installed a couple myself).

Best regards, Jim

While I don't have a 348, it seems that $1250 is a LOT of money for an alternator, that should be able to be rebuilt for a couple of hundred dollars, plus a few bucks for the belt. Besides, why would you want to pay for the brackets, which you already have on the car?

What am I missing?

I think buying the upgrade will be well worth it in the longrun. I have had my 89 for 13 years and for a period of time I had to rebuild the Delco every year...what a nightmare. Since switching to the Nipp it has been bullet proof! Darn Japs!

wasnt sure if you guys saw these, i still havent figured out how to do the link thing, just type ferrari 348 in the ebay search window, there are 2 kits, one for front battery, one for rear battery, no bids yet, of course your better off just having your delco rebuilt and upgraded like i just did
