Hi guys, I'm new here on the board but have enjoyed the discussions for a few months. I have an electric (115V) pressure washer that I purchased from Lowes for 130.00 five years ago. The projected life of the unit is 400 hours per the manufacturer. I have used it on many cars and my entire house twice. The pressure is high enough to peel paint and the tempurature is regulated by the setting of the hot water tank in my house.
I did the underside of my 308 by putting it on jack stands, two in front and three in back, as high as I could get it. I scraped any heavy deposits off with putty knives and and sprayed the entire belly pan and engine/transaxle with a nonflammable, biodegradable degreaser of a green color.I let it sit for 24 hours then sprayed it off.In all I used less than 1/2 gallon of degreaser for a thorough cleaning including suspension and the top of the engine.
Note; all electricals were carefully bagged and masked.
No more quarters for the local spray wash!

I've used a steam jenny before that was electric powered aboard a submarine and it worked great. I don't know what they cost, but I know the temperature range was pretty wide and it cut through the nastiest oil and grime you could find.

Hot water works great on old grease and stuff.
You can get by with lots less pressure.
I've used a unit from Northern Tool that is 115 V electric and has a small diesel fuel tank on it.

Only costs $999.
Has an adjustment knob so you can reduce the pressure well below the 1,000 PSI max.

If you don't want to spend $'s for a steam cleaner all I do is hook the pressure washer up to my hot water line and then use it . Works good here.

Tom: Forget the steam cleaner. Almost 99.9% of the advertised "steam cleaners" are actually hot water pressure washers. A true steam cleaner is VERY expensive.

A new hot/cold water pressure washer goes for around $2500. This is a kerosene heated 115V unit. It weighs about 250 pounds.

Check with Jerry on his used ones. You probably won't be using it enough to justify a new one.

I've got good used ones on e-bay almost continuously, (check the link to my auctions from my website at www.wmpcs.com) but most are 220 volt. I've got a good 120 volt Karcher hot water coming in on trade this week that I would sell for around $1200.00 if you are interested.

There's a lot of them for sale on ebay, might be an okay way to find out some stores and prices.

Tom:
What I have done is to take the wheel wells out and then go to a coin operated car wash. Spray on a little degreaser, (only the biodegradable kind)let it sit for a while then put in the quarters!!
If you could get a jack in the car wash you may want to jack it up and take the wheels off.
Have Fun!!

Any of you guys own a steam cleaner? Can you recommend one? I'm wanting to clean my engine but also don't want to pay a fortune for one.
