I paid about $8 each for the B253 last time I bought them.

Tom and Steve,

Many thanks. My main concern was in filtering ability and, of course, reliability. Trying to get my car near stock. Not necessarily concourse, though for a few $$$ having it more "correct" is fine PROVIDED i AM NOT taking away filtering ability/reliability/etc. ALL help is ALWAYS appreciated.

PS: and have you seen the price of a new cigar lighter for a 308? Sheesh!

Enjoy the Drive,

There's nothing functionally wrong with the (corrected) 23 162 01 UFI filter -- it's a quality mass-produced oil filter IMO. The only problem here in the US is the UFI price (which is usually at least 2X the Baldwin B253 price even from the discount F parts suppliers) -- it just passes thru too many hands to get here. I too was paying $8~9 each for the Baldwin B253 a few years ago from a local truck parts supply so for the same (or even a little better) quality at a much better price the Baldwin is a no-brainer here in the US. Elsewhere, if the UFI was a lower price than the Baldwin (which it probably is in Italy) then it would make sense to use the UFI IMO.

UFI's are fine - they had an issue with the rubber seals a few years back but I think they had resovled it since then - when it happen they were slow to rectify and some customers lost faith in them. You need it or Fram for concours

Tom,

Thanks. Guess what i mean is, forget price. What will work the best. Have been researching air filters too BTW with no real conclusion.

And yes, i have GALLONS of Amzoil Race 2000 20-50 synth so obviously price is not the object here (and PLEASE let us not start an oil debate, pretty please).

no my problem was with the metal casing on the side - there is a seam where it comes together - I noticed a small amount of oil coming out there - as you point out I always put some oil on the rubber gasket

They mentioned that actually. They said that you need to wipe the ring and put a thin layer of oil on the ring as well to help it seat.

I did have a problem with small oil bubbles coming though the outside casing on mine - it was not a big deal and I noticed it right on start up after I had put the new fitler on. I debated whether to change it for about a second - 10k engine rebuild or $10 filter :-)

I agree.

Their filters have design spec's way above Fram and UFI. After all, they were designed for industrial equipment use. I feel that we have done the testing for them. I think in all the filters we have gone through, only one has gone bad. I forgot on who car but if I recall it was nothing big. Fram and UFI have exploded on Ferrari's.

yeah - the lawyers tell them that - too me if there was an issue (328,308) we would have heard about it by now (i.e the testing has been done and what diff does a ferrari make - the fitlers are substitutable with the fram that ferrari recommends) - remember how quickly word of UFI problems travelled

Tom,

When I called baldwin to ask about using their filter on a 348, they said that they have been getting a lot of calls and questions about Ferrari applications. They are proud of that fact but stop short of saying they indorse them for Ferrari until they do their own controlled testing.

I was ordering from Lowry's in Ca but did not like having to pay for shipping - I called around to places near by and found prices around 20 bucks - did people find out we are using them on F-cars???? I just located a place near me 8 bucks - now that is more like it
