Am planning on reinstalling the doors, wire harnesses, etc today. Still need to paint the black stripe which runs the length of each side of the car. Putting the doors on first before this final painting. He then needs to do a final buffing, since there are still a few touch-up spots (some areas have hazed up slightly, which require an additional buffing). He will take pics, and post to his website once it's finally back together. The car then needs a thorough cleaning inside, since filler dust has gone everwhere.

Since Thanksgiving, huh? Well, it looks like he's just about done. And he did it right! You'll soon be enjoying your GTB.

Barry, he has painted the rocker panels with the chip resistant paint. Came out pretty good. It should hold up for a while!
The Rosso Chiaro does take on different shades depending upon the angle/amount of light.

Neil,

I once tried stone chip resistant black paint on the rocker panels of another car I own. After a while, it also began to chip and get that sand-blasted look. You can give it a try. It has a rubberized texture to it. Fortunately, the rocker panels on the Ferrari are easy to repair and paint periodically.

And Rosso Chiaro. I feel that is a very special red as it takes on subtle, different hues depending on lighting conditions.

Phil, not seriously. I tossed it out in jest while at the shop one day, and the painter swayed me otherwise. I might have considered a silver/gray color, but like red just as much, if not better. Can't wait to get the car back home! It's been there since Thanksgiving.

Neil - a question that perhaps borders on heresy....did you consider any color other than Red?

Lee, I don't believe he did. He knows the car will never see inclement weather (at least as long as I own it)! I don't know what he could have done differently for rust protection. I brought this question up to him early on, and he said the car will be sealed tight once the base/clear is applied. I hope he's right!
Barry, thanks for the compliment on my car. It sure looks a heck of a lot better than it did. It had crazing everywhere, particularly on the front bonnet (the aluminum piece). The only rust he located once down to bare metal was a small spot around the right rear taillight section, as well as the front bonnet channel (he said there wasn't enough drainage there).
I am considering having him source a stone chip resistant black paint for the lower rocker panels, instead of original "straight" black paint. Both sides of the car were pretty beat up from the stone chips, especially behind the front tires.

Neil:
The documentation site is amazingly informative for a relative newbie like me!

Quick question, as I haven't finished the whole article yet, did they do any measure of rust-proofing once they were down to the bare metal? I know that the factory did none; I've been wondering if that could be remedied, or if I just need to keep fixing rust spots on my '78 GTS. I've only had it a month, and it only has a couple, but they bother me nonetheless, as do all the other paint imperfections. Your car is looking great!

Thanks for the comments everyone (Peter, good to hear from you)! You've helped me out alot in the past.
It came in a little costlier than I originally anticipated, but I feel it was done right. With respect to going down to bare metal, the painter didn't want to chance there being a problem lurking underneath the surface. He was amazed at the amount of filler, and attributes a lot of the cracking problem to just too much material on the car. I checked with fellow FerrariChatter's a while back before starting this process, and they mostly agreed to go to bare metal - there's no use shortcutting it...as he says at the bottom of his web page, I WILL need a second job after this is done!

Neil, I am following your project closely as I hope to do my 308 soon as well. It looks like you are doing it right.
Question - you may have previously discussed this, but why did you feel the need to take her down to bare metal? Was it corrosion, poor filler adhesion, used aggresive strippers, or...? I was hoping to deal with what I had after sanding off the top coat.

Steve, unfortunately the effort is very time consuming, due to the crude body which is exposed once the sprayable factory body filler which was applied back in '77 is removed (this was unanticipated in my budget). It appears it will be in the $9.3K range when all is said and done. Plan is to begin door reassembly this weekend, then will wait a little while before reinstalling side marker lights, etc.....not a cheap proposition, but I plan on holding onto the car for as long as I'm around, so wanted it done right the first time I guess......it will be slightly over 200 hrs total labor when done......

Neil,

Most impressive. Might i ask what the time factor and final cost was as i am considering doing the same with my 308QV this coming winter (2003/04). Many thanks. ALL help is ALWAYS apprecaited.

Enjoy The Drive,

To follow up on an earlier thread of mine, the car is now painted! Base/clear (Sikkens) have been applied. The painter is now buffing the car. Attached is his entire process documented to date on what he (and I) have went through!
