To those who have said the information I have posted is incorrect... I suggest you take a look inside the female power connector of your Valentine 1 unit. You will observe that there are indeed 6 contacts inside (not four). While true Valentine uses a 4 wire plug, the unit does indeed have a 6-pin connector (which accepts 4-pin connectors). What I posted was correct. |

The center two conductors of the 4-wire conductor are the power leads. The outer two conductors send intelligence to the remote display. To connect, simply use a 4-wire splitter (plastic Radio-Shack) that allows two telephone RJ11's to be fed by one wall outlet. Jim S. |

Steve, The info is incorrect. i called them a week ago and he said it was a normal (4 wire) telephone cord. Looking at the cord that came with my install kit it has a normal, 4 wire cord. Enjoy The Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Greetings: By coincidence I asked Valentine about the wiring for the power connector since it is not included in the user's manual. I want to put a connection in my TRs roof console. Here is the reply I received: The power socket on the V1 has 6 contacts. The power contacts are the 3rd and 4th pins. The pin closer to the display is (-) and the pin closer to the large lens is (+). Thanks Michael Negussu 800-331-3030 ext. 245 Hope this is useful. Steve '88.5 TR

James, Using a meter is ALWAYS wise, yet i feel the (safety) fuse in between is also a good idea. Better to blow the fuse than the V1 unit IMHO. Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

One word of caution - if anyone is interested in "hard-wiring" a power RJ11 into their dome, let me know and I will double check the polarity of the two central conductors. Alternatively, use a voltmeter to carefully probe the voltage of the two central conductors of the RJ11 plugged into the Valentine cigarette lighter adapter. One will be ground, the other will be 12 volts. Jim S. |

Jim, Many thanks for the info. This is what i truly enjoy about Fchat. We all help each other :-) Thanks again my friend and as always... Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin PS: was pulled over by flashing lights today for NO real reason. Seems they just wanted to look at my car so i gave the officers the complete Ferrari tour. They were pleasantly surprised with my joy of carefully showing them the entire car. May as well get on the "good foot" now as in spring/summer i may not be doing the speed limit when those lights come on...

Steven - good job. There is an alternative approach. I wanted to have the option of installing the V1 in several cars, with the remote display. I did not have enough of the various connectors supplied by Valentine. I traced the voltage and signal paths and found that the two inner conductors (on the RJ11 jack) carry power, and the two outer conductors (on the RJ11 jack) carry the signal to the remote display. I stripped a length of 2-conductor telephone cord, and attached the black to ground (If you are interested, let me double check this) and the red to 12 volts (in the dome). I then used a 2-in-1 connect (standard radioShack) for RJ11 connectors, and ran a 4-conductor cord to the remote display. Works like a charm, and did not use any of the Valentine hardware. I prewired each of my cars, and used a small velcro patch on the bottom of the remote display to have a mount on each of the instrument pods where I wanted the remote to sit. I carefully ran the telephone wire from the dome, pressed into the edge of the roof interior panel and the pillar interior panel (where they meets the glass) to end up at the spot where the remote display will sit. This did not require soldering to the circuit board. It allows me to move the V1 and remote display simply by unplugging the RJ11 jack from each. If anyone wants more detail, I can draw a schematic and upload. Jim S.

Mike P, Did what Mike Charness said and tapped off dome light power. Was easy. More details... 1) i fully removed the plastic housing power/aux piece of the V1 power terminal. 2) Then remove the extra phone jack (AUX) with soldering gun so only the main power phone jack and power leads (with fuse jack) are on the circuit board. 3) Used electrical tape around the now bare circuit board that has only ONE phone jack for power to the V1 and the power leads (with fuse jack). 4) Wired the assembly to the power wires of the dome light. 5) Shortened the stock black V1 power cord (phone cord) using Radio Shack phone cord crimper and added new phone jack. 6) Attach custom length phone cord to your now modified V1 power jack 7) Carefully place all wires into the empty space above/around the dome light with the extra length of phone cord staying outside the area. 8) Simply push back on the dome light to its proper place. 9) Place V1 where you want and snap in the power wire Hope this helps. Enjoy The Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Digging around, getting dirty in the FerrariList archives, I found this information about A-pillar removal, from a guy named Michael: In the center of the 'A' pillar trim you will see another panel. Use a plastic tool, (or screwdriver if you are brave) and pry this panel outward. It will "unsnap", revealing a few screws that can now be removed. That's all there is to it. vty, Michael I'm off to the garage to see if I can't get this puppy off... |

Since I need a data connection between the V1 and the concealed display, I can't just tap off power--I need to hardwire through the A-pillar. I know it can be done--there are wires going up to the dome light. My problem is, I can't get access to the A-pillars. I know people have removed the interior trim from the A-pillars before--but I'm stuck. Anybody know how to take the inside trim panels off the the A-pillars? |

You can tap power off of your dome light in your 308. Pop the light out, and you can get to the connections. That's what I did in my QV. |

I have a Mondial but this will probalby work for you. Mount the V1 to the right side of the rearview mirror. I try to put my behind the mirror as much as possible *without* covering the rear antennas. (Laser/bands) I mount the remote display on the steering column, easy to shield where dectectors are not necessarily allowed. I take power from the center console and run behind the A-pillar cover/headliner to the V1. - JMG |

Anybody have a nice setup with their Valentine One in their 308 or 328? Where did you mount the concealed display unit? Where did you mount the detector itself? How did you get power / data signal to each? Thanks, --Mike
