Thanks, everyone, for all of your help. This site is incredibly useful. I love it! By the way, the shift shaft seal will be replaced during this next service - a recommendation from my last service. Does its wear create any strange symptoms? |

Sat4Re: over filling tank will result in puking, as will bad cap. re: #7 - Just read an online article in LA Times about an Exotic car rental agency in LA; he said the only car he did not like driving were the Ferraris...because of the reaction of others to him on the road...said it made him 'embarassed' as he did not like being the center of attention all the time. |

Steve, 1. That noise could be a/c bearing. I had a similar sound on an 85 at that rpm that went away when a/c was fixed. 2. Ferrari speedos are almost always 10% too high. 3. Ferrari radiator caps are pretty bad. I had one once that would not hold pressure even when brand new. Take the cap to a NAPA and for about 5 bucks you will probably solve the problem. Cheapest place to start. I knew a guy once who spent a lot of money trying to figure out this problem before he discovered it was the cap! 4. Every Ferrari I ever drove had a different feeling shifter. Some are easy, some are hard. 5. The rattle you describe I have experienced with several cars. Still don't know why. Don't worry about it. 6&7 Can't help. Dave |

Your speedo error is about the same as my 84 308. |

Dear Stephen, I can't answer the tech stuff...wait for JRV On the speedo, mine shows too fast about 10mph. All my Porsches do the same. I think it is just european insurance for slow US speeds. |

1. Tuning up/checking (all) the rotating stuff on the front of the engine is situation normal for any F so I don't think your mechanic needs any special instructions -- if something's squealing pretty consistently it shouldn't be a big mystery. I'm not exactly familiar with an '85, but the AC belt path on the 2-valve 308s is a little flaky (not enough wrap on the idler pulley) such that giving the V-belts a shot of (e.g., Permatex spray) belt dressing every couple~3 months wouldn't be a serious sin IMO (if it kept things quiet). 2. 3. By "drained" do you mean bled at both the radiator and the thermostat housing? IME bleeding a little air out of the radiator every couple of weeks is nothing to be too concerned about. 4. Try selecting another forward gear (to truly stop the clutch disc/intermediate stuff from rotating) and then quickly (but gently) select 1st. 5. As weird as this may seem, it could be a V-belt noise -- give the V-belts a shot of belt dressing as an experiment (a lot of us have experienced/reported a very "metallic" noises at start up that diminish fairly quickly as the V-belts warm). 6. 7. ditto |

I have an '85 308qv euro. I'm getting ready to drop it off at the Ferrari mechanic in March for a pre-spring run-through. I just wanted to have a better idea of what some of the problems are that I'm going to have him fix. 1. Starting at 3000rpm and usually heard through roughly 4000rpm is a squealing sound that seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine. I talked to Nick (Forza Ferrari) and he said it might be the tensioner bearing. The sound does not go away. The timing belts were replaced in 2001. Late last year, the AC belt was placed back in position after apparently being off for some time! Perhaps it is the culprit? 2. My speedometer reads too fast. When it says I'm going 70, I'm really only going about 63mph. Also, my mileage is off, because when it was converted to miles from kilometers a few years ago, the goofballs somehow didn't sinc it right and it counts off miles too fast (as if it were still in kilometers). The car should have roughly 28,000 miles on it. 3. My coolant overflow drain has been active lately. Twice, I have got the engine hot, turned the heaters on, and drained the air out of the system, but it still overflows every once in a while. 4. I sometimes have an incredibly difficult time shifting into first, but during the same drive it will suddenly get better and shift perfectly smooth! The shifter is not out of alignment. 5. I hear a strange rattling noise coming from what I think is the rear right wheelwell for the first minute or so of every drive. Suspension issue? 6. The car seems to have been idling about 100-200 rpms slower than usual the past few days. This hasn't caused any major problems, however, sometimes when I start the car I have to give it a touch of gas to keep it alive and not stall out when I release the key. 7. Too many people point, nod, and wave at me when I drive down the road. I suppose that's something I can learn to live with. Thanks ahead of time for all of your help. |
