I agree with Lawrence, no matter what the purists say, I would rather use some sealing compound to be sure this doesn't leak. With modern silicone type sealants, it's very easy to apply, cleanup and remove on opening, unlike the "Permatex" brown, sticky crap from the past. The job of putting the cam cover on without shifting the gasket becomes a lot easier. |

When I do my cam covers, I always put a little sealant on the gasket around the periphery of each hole. Still, in time I always find traces of oil in plug holes. I have never found more than a drop or two or three though. |

Off-topic here James, but that is one nice looking GT4 you have... I also noticed you're in Eastern WA... |

Any of the numerous parts sources can provide the needed rubber covers for the spark plug holes. Do replace them. I found out the hard way that every few times I washed my car some water would get past and I would get a miss that would not go away until I found the plug hole with water in it, thoroughly dried it out, and often times, replaced the now fouled plug. Major PITA. Replaced the caps, and all was well. |

I don't think this is unusual. I have a little oil in each hole of the 1-4 bank on my 328. It can only come from a leaking cam cover gasket. I'm letting mine go until next valve adjustment in about 3K miles. Dave |

You need to replace the cam cover gaskets(valve covers, rocker covers what ever you want to call them)They come in three peice sets. One upper gasket, one lower gasket, and a center gasket to go around the spark-plug wells. The center gasket is whats leaking on your car causing oil to collect around the spark pulg. |

just changed my plugs. on one (#7) when i pulled out the socket after losening initially, i found oil up to about 1/2 inch on the socket. When i got done freaking out, i placed a paper towel around the socket and "dippped" until all of the oil was gone before removing the plug all the way, and then replaced the plug. is this somthing that happens often, infrequently, or a result of the plug being loose (it couln't have been more than hand-tight when i started)or what. the plug removed was only slightly fouled and was the only one that was. plugs are/were NGK BP5ES. i am simply not smart enough about these engines to know if this is something simple or serious. do i have a loose valve cover bolt somewhere? valve guides worn? the car runs perfect after the change, and all the new plugs are in tight now. BTW what is a good parts source to replace my little rubber booties? mine are useless. |
