There is a place here in Tampa that just did my clutch. They repad the clutch itself, turn the fly wheel, and rebuild the pressure plate, the total was 200$ complete. All parts like new with warrenty.

Before you throw money at the problem, check the whole pedal/cable/linkage system for smooth operation. The cable may just need some lube where it goes through the cable housing as turns toward the rear of the car. Also the little pulley at the firewall will sometimes seize adding a lot of drag to the cable.

It should be a 1/2 of an inch on the top end if the pedal with some slack on the cable under the car. it's in the OM. if there is no freeplay you MAY have a tight cable and that will not allow the clutch to fully disengage causing premature wear.

DJ, somewhere in 1980 they changed the geometry of the clutch linkage which gave a lighter pedal effort. Run a search on this site, I have posted links to Tony Pallidino's website which describes the conversion process....

The clutch in my 78 is pretty stiff too, stiffer than the one in my friends 80. It was done about 500 miles ago for the previous owner by a shop in Seattle. What kind of free play are we talking about?. Where can I find specs?
Thank you, DJ

That does make it a little more difficult to accept -- I was thinking you'd say 30K~40K miles and 2+ decades so we could chalk it up to situation quasi-normalish.

Steve,

3 years, 12k miles.

Ferrari looked at it this moring as well as the CV joint (other thread) They are pretty sure there is no lube in the case and that there is a broken pin. It falls into the might-as-wells.

I have added it to my To Do list.

Matt: IF you do need a clutch, George Evans has the PP, disc, and TO bearing for $300. The parts certainly aren't your "dollar waterfall" (cute!!), but the labor isn't necessarily pretty.

Matt,
You should first check the adjustment of the clutch cable and the pedal adjustment(freeplay). also, check the cable for any binding especially where it comes out under the body forward of the engine.
If all that is correct, The Failure must be in the bellhousing(clutch, bearing, actuating lever, etc...) requiring removal to repair.
If you need specs for cable adjust and pedal, let me know I could fax to you if you need.

Hummm...thats a real hard one to figure out with out being there to feel it. The dealer will probably tell you you need a clutch though.

It's not the cable. It the feeling in the pedal from the helperspring area. It squeeks likes it dry.

I don't think I need a new one. It does not slip. It's the feeling from the pedal to the helperspring that I am referring to.

I will keep your info handy when I do need one.

If you need a clutch Matt let me know. I have a few sets in stock at work for a good price. E-mail me and I will price one out for you. With the exchange rate you'll be getting a good deal.

My clutch seems stiffer and not as fluid as it use to be. Even up until Sat. I have adjusted the freeplay but it does not seem that is it there. There is slack in the cable but it is a different feel in the clutch. Any thoughts before I take it in?
