>>Plus, the dealer gives a 12 month warranty of the job so i get a year to run the heck out of her and not worry about the belts breaking.<< Only a year? Heck, I give 2 years on parts & lifetime on workmanship. |

I am having thr cam belts changed on my 1982 BB512i with 13,600 miles now. The belts are the original and they look fine. I am having it done as insurance. Plus, the dealer gives a 12 month warranty of the job so i get a year to run the heck out of her and not worry about the belts breaking. |

Thanks for the cam belt into. I plan on driving 3000 to 4000 miles a year, so a 5 years should be about right. Thanks again. RDS |

I know we've discussed this many times before but I think that there is more danger of a tensioner bearing disintegrating than a belt breaking which could result in the same consequences. Bearings that sit for long periods without being turned can have problems, especially if moisture gets inside. My three year old bearing(w/ 6K miles) went from a slight ticking to spitting the seal and inner race out in about five minutes after I started it one day. If that would have happened during a spirited driving session, the belt probably would have jumped a few cogs and made expensive noises. |

I took my '89 328 in yesterday for cam belt replacement and the 30K maint.... the car just turned 19K miles on the odo. The belts were last done in '96, 7,000 miles ago. Was I in jeopardy of blowing a cam belt because I waited 7 years? I really doubt it but who knows???

Thanks Steve, No offence taken. The previous owner had the car for 10 years and did about 14,000 miles. Garage queen? Yes! He started her regularly, but only drove her around the block a few times about once a month. I took the car from 23,371 to 24,272 miles in two days!! Unfortunately the European weather caught up with me and the car has been garaged since November 2, 2002. Spring is on it's way...and it seems as if I should get the belt done before I have no investment to protect Cheers, MARK

Mark, Would you consider your miles consistant mileage, that is driven every week or so, or once every month, getaway etc? I have heard from many that regular driven miles are a better barometer for belt service. Regular drivers are pretty solid for 15K/5 years, but with garage queens(no offence), it is much harder to gauge the real condition of belts due to the lack of operation. I'd recommend protecting your investment and doing the belts. Steve |

Gentlemen, The previous owner of my 328 GTS (1986) replaced the cam belt at 21,840 miles on June 5, 1998. The car now has 24,272 on the clock. As I am approaching the 5 year mark is there general consensus that I should replace the cam belt (although the car has done only 2,500 miles since the last change)? Thanks, MARK |

Ron, This topic is a hot one, but most are suggesting not going more than 5 years between belt service. Check out the archives for in depth, and expert comments. Congratulations on your new Ferrari |

I recently purchased my first Ferrari and I am some what concerned and very confused on cam belt replacement. I have heard the belts should be replaced at intervals any where from eighteen months to 8 years. This is not an immediate concern because mine was done when I bought the car. However I would like to know when they should be replaced. Thank You RDS |
