Sam, Another 348 owner bought his replacement alternator from Autozone since it is the same for 92-94 Camero Z-28. He found out that the Nippon unit puts out 140A so he rebuilt it from 105A to 135A. Then he added an excitor wire to the 12V ignition wire on the alternator since that's what Ferrari did with the Nippon alternator. He's on this chat line with the screen name "Wfelder" aka Bill. He's very nice and helpful. Good luck, Julian |

Here's my insight on this. 1- The Delco that was OEM with the car as installed at the factory is/was a troublesome unit, charging amps (105/ah)were to low for load demand. 2- A Nippon-Denso unit was selected as a replacement sometime in late 93/early 93. 3- There was a replacement Delco unit (p/n # 139421) that also solved the problem. My car was retrofitted with that unit in Oct96. No known problems. I have also installed a Alpine power amp since then. The charging system works just fine. I tested by applying a full load, with all accessories, lights ect. Again no problems (other than the standard slow windows). So, I seems that the OEM unit was the problem ...Or I just got lucky. >> Larry |

I think mine is a "105A" which the mechanic said its a "reposte" ( or something italian sounding) and was only available from Ferrari. He said the upgraded alt for later model year would cost $1,500 from Ferrari. I have a early 1990 model. I was hoping/thinking these were bosch items. I also heard the alt's on some ferrari were Delco that were originally made for Jeep but were troublesome in the field and that ferrari jumped on the overstock since they got a great deal on them from delco. I also heard that rebuilding these delco's actually makes them worse since the rebuild parts availble are very cheap plastic items. I was driving along nicely when the battery light came on and when I stopped the battery was dead, charged the battery cleaned-up all battery connections and put new terminals. checked the Alt belt was good and right tension - probably the alt gave up as it is no longer charging. How much (where sourced) and what exactly was your nippo upgrade? all info appreciated. I will change that huge drive belt at the same time. |

Is your altenator a Delco? If it is a Delco then replace it. I had my Delco rebuilt for my '91 348. I was told at the time that rebuilds were unreliable. A Ferrari Tech told me this. He was right. The altenator failed within three months. I did the Nippo upgrade. That was one year ago and I am still running strong. Dan |
