I haven't looked at this for a while, but thinking about it, when my light is centered, it is always on, when I push to one side, it goes off. As I said before, it is not being triggered by the door switch. I assume the door switch wiring is faulty such that it is not turning off, but I'd have thought rocking hte light turns it on, not off, in which case maybe the wires are switched on the light?
I'll look at it this weekend

Oops! Philip, you're right... We're not comparing apples to apples. I'm speaking from the sole experience of a 78 308 GTS. The dome light is one area where the 308 GTS and 308 GTB differ (apparently significantly)... Nonetheless, the same principles must apply, just in a different way. Domelight is on when a negative-ground is applied to the circuit, which otherwise should always have +12V going to it.

Mike, thanks. I'll get out the volt meter. On the dome light function, my "always on" is actuated by pushing on the passenger side of the light so it tilts transversely.

If the dome light in our 308s does not have one lead that is +12V all the time, then it will not light up ever.

Check that you can get power to the light by moving the switch to the "always on" position (switch forward towards the windshield).

If you don't, then: 1. There is a problem with your +12V lead to the dome light. 2. There is a problem with the domelight ground connection (short connection to chassis, a few inches from domelight mount).

If you do, and you don't get a light change from your door switches being pushed in, then you've got a problem with the door pin switch or the door pin switch wiring.

The idea is that, when the door is open, the pin is NOT pushed in, and the back of the switch, since the switch is not being pushed in, will make contact with the chassis, creating a ground. This leads to the domelight. If you give it a ground, and the domelight's got +12, you should get a light.

If this is your problem, you either have a defective pin switch (the little tops of the rivets can easily break after 25 years, happened to me). Or, the switch is not making clean contact with the car doorjamb cover (which it's attached to), which means you're not getting a good ground connection. Clean it!

BTW, anybody know of a good source for door pin switches?

My dome comes on when I open the door.

Randall, does your clock work?

On my car, the dome light doesn't trigger from opening the car door. It can be turned on by pushing one end of it so it rocks. From your description, Mike, is the door switch or the door switch ground to blame or the black chassis ground?

FYI, domelight is negative ground. It should have one lead with power, then two grounding leads--purple and black. Purple is constant ground (Chassis), black is from the door pin switch. The three-way switch determines which gets connected--constant ground (always on), none (always off), or door-pin-switch ground (on when door is open).

Use a voltmeter to verify correct behavior at all three switch positions...

The radio should be powered by a switched voltage source, you should confirm this--the domelight's positive lead is an "always on" voltage source (so you can have domelight illumination regardless of the ignition key position). I don't think that the power supply is the same... Do you remember ever using your radio without the ignition key in the "RUN" or "Accessory" position?

The positive lead runs from from the domelight, through the top of the windshield, and down the right windshield a-pillar, to the fusebox area... Haven't traced it past that.

My dome light won't turn on anymore. I checked all the fuses and the bulb. There's no power going to it, but I'm not exactly sure where the power comes from. The radio also stopped working, but I haven't been able to remove it yet because I don't have the special keys to do so. Is there a power supply that is common for these two items? Any pointers on where to look for my domelight problem?
