I've started to have a rev problem at idle, usually around 1500rpm. It started the day I picked it up from it's 30k. I called the shop and the first thing the guy asked me was if it was the floormat! I learned the floormat 'cruise control' lesson the day I bought the car! I played with the throttle assembly and thought I had it ironed out, but it has started again. Add it to the list. |

Another stupid person here------I had the same situation happen with my floormat. I caught it though before I went too crazy |

Same problem on my trip to Vegas last year...in my case the throttle return spring under the hood had 20 years dirt on it, sprayed it with carb cleaner, wire brushed it, WD 40'd it and now returns to idle with no problem! |

Your plan-of-attack sounds good Bret. |

I think what I'm gonna do is try and get BMW, Volvo, maybe my mom can find someone at Mercedes even, to pull it apart and work on it. Mine looks like it has been separated once before below the fuel distributor and above the air channel (that metal tube below the distributor), so I wouldn't be surprised if it was tweeked. It was in California for awhile, so I'm pretty sure the settings are a bit off. First thing I'm going to do though is put it all together with new sensors, readjust it (with the screw) so that the O2 sensor is reading proper voltage, if it runs fine like this then I'm not gonna touch anything in the distributor, but if it doesn't I'm gonna have to do something with it. Hopefully it's just a mix of bad sensors and the simple O2 being off, that would be nice. |

Are you saying Bret you're going to pull apart the fuel distributor? There have been warnings here that it'll never be the same if do it... I don't like to put doubt into people's minds (I sure do it to myself fine), but this is a pretty sensitive piece of kit... |

Greg, my Dad said that to me like two weeks ago. I should, well I think I'll be a pretty good source of 308 info when all is said and done. I bet I could write a book, hmm... |

I also have to pull apart the distributor as there may be a blown seal in there which could be contributing. Damn Ferrari. |

My car used to bust my balls endlessly when I first got it with a situation like this. I still haven't completely fixed it I don't think. The tach sensor was shot and was causing most of the problem I think, but occasionally I still get it a little. When it all goes back together it will have all new sensors, I'm gonna pull the FI controllers and make sure they are all and well. Readjust the FI system. And hopefully after all of this it will idle properly. My car would run fine if I rigged an additional spring to pull the throttle plate closed, which I did for awhile until I replaced the sensor. btw, I also hardwired it so it doesn't read through the sensor in the expansion tank. Where is the other plug that some have disconnected, it is by the fuel distributor or something? |

I had a simliar experience a week or so and I was just as concerned. Now here comes the stupid part...when I got home, I layed on my belly and started looking at the accelerator peddle. Evidently, the floor mat had gotten stuck near the peddle and the car was staying in the 2K range. I thought mine was mechanical / electrical, ended up being floormat related. |

The electrical switch in the coolant tank is probably going bad. |

My 81 308GTSI has revved unexpectedly while driving. The first occurrance was while I was driving. I depressed the clutch and the revs stayed the same, as though my throttle was stuck. the next occurrance was sitting at Idle (warm engine),it just started reving to about 4K (steady) like it was in warm up cycle (only higher RPM). Lately it is only happening every once in a while but has me concerned anyway. Any thoughts? |
