Dave, I changed my oil (my first time doing it) last night........everything went very smoothly. No horror stories to report. As Byron said earlier, I had to remove a "skid" plate in order to access the oil sump plug. I added 10.5 fresh quarts directly to the tank.....as far as I know, this is the only place to add it. The manual says it holds 11 qts, I put in 10.5, started it, idled for 10 minutes and immediately checked fluid. Everything looked good. Good Luck! |

sorry, I meant more the issue of how much oil at a time, to ensure no overfill occurs, i.e. what amount before starting her up and checking the stick level etc |

The drain plug on the engine block is a standard 12mm... any hex key would do the trick. Depending on your set up under the car, you may have to remove some plates under the car to get to the plug. Exact location is listed in your owner's manual, but essentially, the plug is at ahead of the block, facing the front of the car.

drain the sump, drain the block, refill and change the filter. Drain the sump by...taking you luck with the sump plug or removing the 4 bolts to the bottom plate. That way you can clean the sump screen while you are there. |

Philip, You can always remove the bottom of the sump to drain it. Just get a replacement gasket. |

Philip, The screen is internal in the sump. You can see it if you remove the 4 bolts at the buttom of the sump. I was under the same impression but once the drain plug on the sump is striped, it add's a whole new level of complexity. |

Matt, I'm going to change my oil soon,(the first time I've done it on a 348.) The screen your talking about.......isn't that internal, I was under the impression to just remove the tank plug and then the sump plug, drain and refill......any special suggestions or helpful hints before I do this? thanks |

You have been grinding the gears. I had mine changed and no filing to be found. |

I recently did an oil change on a 348 and there were small metal shaving in the transfer case (which I expected but the amount was more then usual) and quite a bit in the sump drain and screen. The ones on the sump were quite a bit larger then I expected as well. Both suprised me by not only the size but the amount. More so then the Boxer or 308. Is this normal for a 348? |
