That's right. If your valve covers are peeling, make sure to re-coat it (RED). Repaint the exhaust shields(silver) with hi-temp paint. |

Again, good ideas - I appreciate it. Last call !! Any other items I should consider before taking the car in next week. I am sure Martin has some words for me. Thanks to all. |

David, While the engine is out, how about a few cosmetic upgrades? It is a good time for a thorough cleaning of the engine bay. How is the condition of the paint on the valve covers? How about an abrasive blasting of the cam belt covers? If you're not concerned about "winning the concourse" you could even powder coat assorted pieces. How is the condition of the underside of your engine cover? Might as well address this now? And OF COURSE, address all scheduled mx and factory recommended upgrades, (or for that matter, any upgrades YOU might like). Snap a few phots for sure for your mx records. Document, document, document............ |

David, Your repair facility should be able to check for all the factory recomended up-grades. I know for my '91 348ts there were a handfull. Everything from idler bearings and intermediate shaft bearings to the bottom belt pully. A new up-graded bottom pully was installed a year and a half ago and 8k miles later, it failed causing the dreaded topend rebuild (20 valves bent). A call to FNA might be in order. My pully was installed by a well respected Ferrari shop. Better safe than expensively sorry. Assume nothing. My tuppence worth Steve Anderson |

I feel like there must be some other things to add to the list. Everyone is usually quick to "rag" on the 348 about things breaking. Now I ask what I should have worked on ahead of time and the comments become short. Maybe the 348 is really not as bad as everyone likes to say. So far we say: Water Pump replacement and accessory cooling items, all belts and plugs,,, Anything else ??? |

Pressure flush out the cooling system. When I did my 11k mile 348 Spider you wouldn't believe the crap that came out. |

Replace the water pump, even if it is still good. It will save you a bunch of money later on down the road. |

Pull the plenum/manifold assembly and replace all the coolant hoses and check the water fittings for corrosion (especially the small header tank to crossover fitting, drill out and install Factory TSB update if corroded) and update as neccesary. |

Check the water pump(replace if you have doubts). Spark plugs, might as well change all the drive belts(alternator, AC, etc). Anything else? |

Scheduling for my 95 348 Spider's major engine out service in a few weeks. She has 18k but is over due on the age of the car. While the engine is out is there any "extras" I should have them do ?? I realize the cam belts, tensioners, etc.. The dealer ( Foreign Cars Italia ) will do the usual book things. Did't know if you had any suggestions while the engine is out. I would rather know now. All suggestions are appreciated. |
