Thanks for your insights and sources for replacement cores. BTW, Also discovered the reason for boost problem. Mechanic has readjusted the blow off valve without telling me. |

CTK, sure I realize the unit would have to be opened up to access the internal leak/hole and then welded closed. Is this unit Brass or Aluminum? Brass is rather easy because it's repaired with lowish temp silver solder, aluminum is a little harder and trikier I agree because it requires higher heat to effect the repair. As far as the fins, unless there's something I'm not aware of, the exchanger doesn't need every single fin intact to still perform it's job. A photo or drawing would help understand more fully of course, but it seems a skilled guy could repair it. Sure you can em me privatelty if you need further assistance. |

JRV, Thanks for your quick response. The main problem is how to replace or braze the fins or tubes back, they are quite fragile. Some suggestions were made about using aluminium cooling fins from an ac unit but I'm concerned about the cooling and heat capacity of the change (if at all possible. First off, I would have to cut open the intercooler unit which is an operation in itself. Will try to figure out how I would post a pix, if not, would you mind if I emailed you directly? Thanks. |

Seems that if you go to/call around to an Aircraft Repair Facility (large or small airport) someone can help you easily, especially if you can find a Mechanic that works on Twin Engine "Turbo" Props. If not post some photos of the unit to allow a look at the problem and possible solutions. |

Have any of you got tips of how I can get my air to water intercooler repaired? Due to age and some hard knocks, the cooling matrix inside the aluminium casing has snapped in several places, causing water from the unit to leak into the cylinder head, if left with water. I am now driving the Koenig turbocharged engine without the intercooler. Temperatures will go past the recommended 80 deg C with hard driving, which is not good. Living in Singapore, no shop wants to take on repairs without more specific infformation of how it is to be repaired. Maybe I should go for a modern air-to-air unit with an electric fan set-up. Problem is calculating the right size and getting it to fit in the tight space. Any Comments anyone? Thanks. |
