Expect to pay a lot of money and be told that a lot more things need to be done to your car other than the service at an extra cost.

>>Call your local Ferrari dealer and ask. You'll see.<<

And if a rookie in a hurry (watching the clock instead of the engine) puts a cam cap or two back on wrong add about $7500 more to that ;-(.

8k is an officl Dealer estimate I got from Algar Ferrari. Last April.
If you do it yourself a lot less.
Must know how and have tools.
If you find a non-Ferrari shop you can trust I'd say about half that number.
Call your local Ferrari dealer and ask. You'll see.

You can buy a new in the crate engine for less than $8k. The major service on my BB512i is only costing $5k ! I would go some where else to get it done. The cost should be in the $3k range .

I was kinda shocked at the $8k myself. I was under the impression it would be in the $4k range. Yikes!

Bruno what drives the $8k cost here ? Is it the labor. If you are a DIY person this is no big deal but if you go to a dealer then I guess it is all in time. The person I bough my 77 from had a 30k done for $1800 from a shop that deals in Italian cars and with the exception of the WP and alt. did all of the other items. So based on the worksheet I got it looked like about $600 for parts and the rest labor. So I would assume a 78 would run about maybe $2k - $2500 worse case? Why don'y we list some parts prices here for this service.
WP rebuild $200
Alt rebuild $125
Timing belts and bearings $225
Gasket/seal set $100
Fuel hoses $20
Water hoses $20
A/C Freon (R12 $200) 134A $30
Belts (A/C , WP ) $40
Carb. rebuild $??? Each
Oil/Filter change $25
Air filter (K&N) $80
Fuel filter $20
So far $865

Lets add to the list here and see what we come up with.

Quick point to note--if you're changing belts, recommend changing the tensioner bearings as well.

I think that a valve adjustment will be called for, as well.

Basically, everything that's called for in your owners manual, you'll need to do... Do a search on 308 and Major Service oin the archives, you should come up with some good stuff.

You'll want to replace all the filters (air, fuel oil). Check the fuel pump as well.

If you've never had alternator work done, I recommend removing it, sending it to a local shop for a rebuild and voltage regulator replacement.

If it's time for a battery, I recommend an Optima Red Top.

These are just a few things from experience that I've had to replace, not explicitly called for in the 60k. The "do this work at this mileage" lists are based primary on use and wear on the car. Our cars are 25 years old, and there are a few more things to take a look at (from experience, some of the things that I've mentioned above).

I echo Bruno's comments about a full carb rebuild and cleaning. There's also some AC service items to be done.

If they've never been done, recommend replacing the ignition coils as well. You'll definitely want to change out the spark plugs (recommend one or two heat ranges higher than called for in the owners manual). New spark plug wires as well.

Oh yeah, check the radiator cap for ability to hold pressure.

Also, take a look at your fuse box. I'd recommend at least a good cleaning of all the contacts and replacining of all of the fuses (I had some pretty scary looking ones). Lots of information on this in the archives.

That's about all I can think of!

When was the last major done? at 30k. If so on that car at Ferrari with water pump rebuild and all bearings, cam seals, distributors and rubber hoses as you stated $8k+.

And I would rejet the carbs and clean and rebuild at same time.
Also is all the emission equipment on the car?

Greetings everyone,

My '78 GTS is due for a 60k. What sort of work will typically be necessary and how much should I expect it to cost? Anything else I should have looked at while this is being done? I plan on having all the fuel hoses changed.

Thank you!
