Steve:
Sometimes I'm not very "Mechanical" but I'll give your suggestion a try.

Thanks again!

Paul - most likely an ECU issue. Unless the TR is running poorly and dumping fuel into the Cat, it is unlikely that you have an overheating Cat.

Mine did the same thing. I switched the thermocouple to the opposite ECU, and the intermittent light came on with the same 1-6 cylinders. This proved that it was the ECU and not the thermocouple or Cat. Simple to try. ECUs are on a plate on passenger (right) side of engine bay. Follow the metal braided wire from the Cat thermocouple to find them. You will have to remove a few 10 mm nuts, and carefully unscrew the electrical connectors to swap ECU/Thermocouples. Easy to do.

If it is solely an electrical problem do you think a short drive ( a few miles ) to a mechanic would be a problem?

If the cold self-test is not working correctly then you've got an electrical gremlin somewhere for sure (and IMO if the cold-test has gremlins the warning system really can't be relied on at all). I eventually wound up replacing both the warning light ECUs on my '91 TR (and I think it's a fairly common TR malady), but it never hurts to try dressing/cleaning the warning light ECU connections to see if that helps. If it's a consistent 1 side only problem you can try swapping the ECUs and/or the thermocouples around to see if you can isolate the source of the problem to a single component. Good hunting...

The slow down light in my 87 TR came on for a few seconds last weekend and then cleared up. Today as soon as I started the car it came on (along with the buzzer). When I went to restart the car the light/buzzer came on as soon as I turned the key in the ignition. Doesn't seem like an overheated cat- anyone have a similar experience and any suggestions for a remedy.
