My shields are long gone as are the converters. I have no ill side affects because of it. I think with the extra lid louvers that the converter only cars have (to deal with the extra heat generated) we are better off than the 76-77 cars once the smog is gone. Better engine compartment cooling as well as the outlets in the lower quarters near the exhaust.

While in the subject, is it best to remove the shields from the headers??
I understand that the main reason to have them is to keep as much heat as posssible for the CC to operate properly. If you remove the CC do you really need them ??

Tim, torque gain is what you are looking for and compression will help in that department as will the cams to compliment the increase in squeeze. I dont care about HP at 7800rpm, I like pull from 2000rpm up.

first of all, it matters as to what year 308 you are talking about. I am assuming since ken ross has a qv, he is asking about the qv exhaust. the 83 has 2 cats and I am uncertain about what headers it has. The 84 and 85 are the same and are the same set up as all the 328s. the Usa front bank header comes down and goes to the passenger side of the car. the usa rear header comes down to the passenger side as well where both headers meet to dump into 1 cat and then into the silencer. The euro front header comes down and goes to the driver side, the rear header to the passenger side and tie into the silencer on opposite sides. (no cats) therefore the 2 units are not interchangeable unless you are changing headers ....PERIOD. My final point is that this is pointless conversation. the euro has 10 more hp than the us version. I dont think anyone is to say that it is the exhaust or the higher compression pistons. Plus, wouldn't the us car catch up with the cat removed. I cant see how buying new headers to convert to the euro set up is worth the cash for 10hp if that. Which starts a new question...HOw much extra power can you gain going to 10.5 to 1 pistons. I would hate to spend $1800 for 5 horsepower.

After looking at the pictures Steve have posted it appears that I have the ANSA style, no 'cats'. Just as well. I noticed the openings in the rear valance had some irregular elongation of the openings which prompted the question a while back. Not sure if I even have the original valance, all one piece with downward facing louvers.
Thanks for the info, DJ

DJ, I agree with steve, yours did not come that way but it is better than the correct one, thats for sure. My 79 has a 76-77 style muffler that could be an anza for all I know. The main thing is the front header dumps straight to the right side rather than bending and twisting to get to the left end. The only problem with the 76-77 muffler is the tip spacing is around 1" wider preventing the large cover to line up and poke through so someone "adjusted the pipes" to line up. I since re-adjusted them and bought the 77 valance and small slotted cover. I prefer that look anyway.

DJ -- Forgot to put this in the previous post, but from your description of the exhaust routing it sounds like something similar to an ANSA silencer construction. This is the (aftermarket) ANSA (non-cat) exhaust system from my ex-'78 308GTS:

Paul, I have a 78 GTS. The forward header dumps into the R/H side of the muffler and aft header dumps into the left side. By your discription my car does not have a 'cat'.Would this be correct for a stock exhaust for this car.

Tim, how would the headers go to the opposite side of the car? The front one in particular. I agree the cat cars and non-cat cars swap the inlet pipes to the muffler but for example on mine, the 77 308 front header connects to the right side of the muffler eliminating the bend and the converter to make it enter the left side like a cat-car would. You can swap a non-cat system onto a 78 and newer, it bolts right on. The headers dump at the same locations they just route the gases differently after that depending on smog or not. I would like to see a pic of the header dumping the opposite way just out of curiosity.

I would buy it and make it work. I dont think the pipe sizes would be an issue and if the muffler comes with the pipes that connect to the collectors then the rest would be minor.

on the euro car the headers go to opposite sides of the car and each attach to the silencer on different sides of the car (seems more balanced to me) the usa car has each header going to the passenger side of the car then meeting with the cat the to a single inlet for the silencer. Therefore, the silencers are not interchangable unless you are changing the headers as well.

I am referring to the muffler only.

Ken -- Go to the FerrariUK site (thru the F Owner's site) and you can view illustrations of both systems -- the functional differences are the euro headers are uninsulated, and the euro system has simple pipes from header-to-silencer instead of cats. The '85 US silencer seems quite different from the '85 Euro silencer, but it is a litle unclear to me too what you mean by "exhaust system" -- do you mean everything (headers, pipes, silencer) or just the silencer itself?

Jeff, Are you refering to the exhaust ports on the cylinder heads being larger on a Euro QV? Thats interesting if thats the case. I know the valance on the euros can have the cut-outs where as the US spec cars have the tips slightly lower and use the muffler cover in stead. I assumed the header collectors are all the same and the exhaust would interchange excluding the tip location which can be over come easily.

Ken,
It won't fit. The exhaust ports on the Euro cars are bigger. When I did the service on my 308, Rutlands accidently sent me gaskets for the US car. They're much smaller than the euro.

What is the difference between the exhaust system on a USA car compared to an Euro car? I have been offered an Euro exhaust very cheap, but my USA stock exhaust appears to be in good condition. Is there any reason to install the Euro exhaust?
