Fixed! Put car on lift - unscrewed tachometer sheath from distributor base. Removed tachometer from instrument panel, unscrewed sheath from tachomter, pulled cable out. No problem (must shorter than I thought it would be). Greased cable with silicone Mobil 1 grease. Carefully re-inserted cable into sheath behind tachometer (so as not to get grease all over everything), and screwed sheath back on to tachometer. Re-installed tachometer. Went under car, easily aligned cable into drive at base of distributor, screwed sheath to base of drive. No more tach-cable noise. Thanks. Jim S. |

YUP! I've had to do the same thing. Realignment is the fun part. In my experience I broke both ends loose then reattached the gauge end first (that is assuming the gauge is still in the car. I would then go to the opposite end where hopefully there is better access and visbility and spin the cable to align it with the drive, it being easier to spin the gauge than to spin the tach drive from the gauge end. Hope that helps, DJ |

William - can one remove the cable from the sheath? Your post implies that I can pull the cable out of the sheath from the instrument end. If so, then I assume that upon re-inserting, one must turn the cable until the square end aligns with the female receiver in the the drive unit (where ever that might be, distributor base, etc.). Thank you. |

The cable is making noise because it has either too sharp a bend in it or it is dry. You can remove the cable from the instrument end. Spin off the thumbnut at the gauge and move the casing down to access the cable. Use a light grease on the 2/3 towards the engine compartment. |

Has anyone experience with early (1972) vintage instrument cable anatomy? My C4 tach cable produces considerable "chatter." I would like to slide the cable out from the sheath to lubricate with grease, rather than dripping oil down the cable (which might find its way to the instrument cluster and stain the face of the tachometer). Can the cable be removed from the sheath? If so, from which end does one remove it? Is there a washer on the cable that will prevent the cable from being removed from either end? Help is appreciated. Thank you. Jim S. |
