Here's a trick I used on my mondial to get rid of wind noise at speed at the top of the windshield. I removed the seal. Then place a strip of polyurethane windshild sealer in the channel where the seal goes to "raise" it slightly and put the seal back in. You can use this stuff behind seals to prevent noise and leaks. Also it is not visible. |

Yeah, the seal is probably too compressed from age now. The car is 25 years old now....check the condition of your targa top pins too, they have upgraded the pins to a harder plastic from the original rubber ones, much more resistant to breaking in half...I replaced them on my previous 308, and now on my new 328. |

Tommy: Leatherique Prestine Clean does as good a job as anything in keeping the rubber fresh. But if it's already hardened, I don't know anything that can "fluff it up".

Tommy, No. The problem is that they develop memory and once it is set, it only gets worse. Also another problem is that sometimes the peg that slide into the windshield header sometimes tear and strike the rubber. |

Is there a good conditioner that can be applied to these rubber seals to help renew them? |

I had my 78 308 GTS updated to the later style seal, purchasing the updated parts from T. Rutlands, Ted also providing the factory technical service bulletin. I had the work done by a expert body shop man. The mod requires not only installation of a new peice of sheet metal (riveted to the top of the windsheild frame) but also modification and refinishing on the front of the targa top. After, all new seals were installed. It sealed perfectly at the front, but still leaked slightly at the corners, of the A-pillar. Overall, I would not recommend this change, considering the cost (about $500 for the kit/seals, $800 for installation). I would just replace the factory seals and call it good. My body man did mention that when he pulled of the old seal, it was quite obvious that a previous shop (dealer?) had taken a pair of vice-grips and bent the metal flange retaining the seal, toward the targa top, to tighten the seal. I would do this too, and replace the seal, rather than attempt the upgrade.

Dan, That was me that made the comment. GT car parts has the cheapest price on the front seal. (623) 780-2200 To make things more confusing. 77-78 there was a one piece foam seal that the targa top pushed into. mid 78 until late 79, the front seal became a three piece one piece seal. It was rubber from the mid point of the bottom of the door until just about 3 inchs from the top of the windshiend frame. Then it became some sort of foam material. In late 79 they switched to the targa sitting on the front seal. Ferrari also made a retrofit kit for the older cars at a cost of $1400 back then. Matt |

I seen a comment here a few days ago about the seal for the Targa Top. I believe that the person said there was a difference after 1979. The newer style sat on the seal and the older style pushed against the seal. My 308 was produced in Dec of 79 and appears to have a seperate seal for the top across the front. My top sits on the seal. it is not part of the door pillars and door jam seals. Any input into where I can get this seal and what differences are there in the years and seals? thanks, Dan |
