>>It sounds like a lean condition, but it smells rich. Any insights? << Hate to be a broken record but both cars need a sniffer up the ole pipe...sounds painful I know...which must be why so many refuse to do it...LOL... the smell is unburned hydrocarbons not neccesarily running rich...lean misses produce heavy smells as do any type of engine missing. You'll both need to gather some data (gas analyzer results) in order to start the hunt for a solution. |

My 85 Cab has a similar problem. I recently purchased it in FL. It ran great there. Got it back to Ohio, no elevation change, but it backfires through the intake on acceleration, not hard acceleration, ANY acceleration. Does it worst when "cold", but still does it when it warms up. It sounds like a lean condition, but it smells rich. Any insights? |

I had the same problem just after I bought mine in Oct. 2002. It turned out to be a bad catalytic converter. I switched the oem cat out with a hyper-flow cat. That solved it, emissions were perfect. At the same time I added a K & N filter. Surprisingly I noticed a moderate horsepower increase. |

I just acquired a mint 1985 Cabriolet, and have a question regarding fuel/air mixture adjustment. The car came from California and I live at a elevation of 6000 ft. Anyone out there have advice of how to adjust the mixture?. The car is running very rich due to the lower air density here. Also looking for any other Mondial owners in the Denver, Colorado area. Thanks in advance for any comments. I'm glad to have stumbled upon the this forum. |
