I got the rack back today. $171.60 plus $10.00 shipping. I am very satisfied. From the way it was to the way it is now, it is stiff as it can be so they did a good job. It even has oil in it. All I did was mount it. Tow trunk is soming in the morning to take it to Lindsey's for a front in alignment. I am very please and would recommend Atlantic Enterprise for rack rebuilds. See thier website at www.atlantic-ent.com My 2 cents Kelly |

I read your post in the other section. I planned on rebuilding my rack on my 308 GTS. I don't plan on using Atlantic from what I was told by a few members of this site. I was quoted $225 from them. Let me just say that I traded with Greg and didn't have any problems. |

Check with JoeChristmas he was supposed to send me a rack in the mail weeks ago, that he has already offered to some other people I found out, perhaps if you could get him to do a paypal it would be worth the trade |

I get my rack back tommorrow. It shipped just like they said it would, 72 hours after they got it. I sure hope I did not get ripped off. $171 for a rebuild is really cheap. I'm gong to try to put it in tomorrow night. Thaks for all of your feed back. Kelly |

Curious... I went to the buy-steering site and they only list racks for 308's up through '82. I thought the rack in the QV was the same as the earlier cars. Can anybody confirm? |

I just ordered a remanufactured rack from http://www.buy-steering.com/. $350 plus a $150 core deposit. Haven't decided yet if I'll actually return the old core. May keep it as a backup in case the "new" one is cr*p. $12 shipping and the return is free in the same crate. Looks good, but will have to see. |

Dr Tommy, the pre-tension was too thight on my rack. I just removed the oval lid fitted with two 6mm screws (oposite the pinion shaft) and removed one of the thin shims and added 75W-90 oil since the rack was pretty dry. It might be possible to add oil through the "pre-tention lid" with the rack in the car, but I suggest that you remove it. |

http://www.superformance.co.uk/specialoffers.htm They are even running a special at 205 Pounds British. Wonder how hard this would be to machine a rack and pinion like they did? Probably more that 205 Pounds. |

Brian - thanks! I had seen the Superformance quick ratio kit for the 308 and was wondering how difficult it would be to make the Mondial steering a bit quicker. I know they are power, but are T rack parts applicable? I think there are probably more than one Mondial owner that would like a bit quicker steering even if it is a bit heavier when slow ("loud..uncomfortable...macho - that's good for you" - Ferrari driver to the Cobra driver in Gumball Rally) Tante grazie a tutto Russ |

Russ, IIRC the front track on the mondial is wider than the 308, hence the rack is longer. To my knowledge the racks are not interchangeable. |

Anyone know if a quicker ratio 308 rack, or even a Superperformance quick rack could be fitted to a Mondial? |

Ulf - what do you mean by "one less shim"? I have never seen a rack pulled out. Where do you add oil and can you do it without pulling the rack? |

Only $621.10 for a brand new rack for a 328 from Ferrari UK. Figure $75 for shipping and duties (a rough guess) and that is less than $700 for new. Rebuilds run $400 to $600 depending on who is doing the job, and it can be a crap shoot as to whether you get a good one or not. I have been quoted up to $1550 for a new rack in the USA, plus shipping! |

Just rebuild it. It is really easy to have done. Rotex in Gardena California does it for example. Mechanics don't like the rebuild because they have to warrantee the work. so if the rebuilder screws up the mechanics has to do the work again for free. They don't like that. The rebuilder just says send it back too bad. So the mechanic like oem they are in business to serveyou second and pay themselves first. They are not going out of their way to save you money and it takes too much tie for the mechanics to explain and get you to except the risks. |

My rack was set up too thight. One shim less and fresh oil did wonders for my car. The rack is very easy to remove, I did the whole job in 4hrs. |

Kelly, I too am looking for a new steering rack for my 328, as it has some play in it. I have been advised by three mechanics to not mess with rebuilt steering racks, as too many times they are not satisfactory, and you end up wasting valuable labor and dollars swapping them out. Just sort of the "luck of the draw"...YMMV so if you wish to go the "rebuilt" route, more power to you...Ferrari UK has some pretty awesome prices for new, but unfortunately are out of stock on the 328 part. |

I've noticed a shimmy lately in taking curves. It is the right steering rack. The rod coming out of it is loose. I guess, I'm looking at a steering rack rebuild. I understand the right always goes out. The left side is leaking oil. I've searched all the archives and I've got a good list of people to call tomorrow. Has anyone got a better mouse trap. Please let me know. I guess I'll be looking for some kind of a rebuild kit to do it myself or to ship it some where like Norwoods to get rebuilt. Any advise is always appreicated. Thanks kelly |
