Scott if it's a rebuilt it could possibly be a rough bearing. It could be the cooling fins behind the pulley are bent and scraping on the
alt. housing. Retrace your steps. remove the belt and turn the pulley on the Alt. by hand to see if you hear any noise. This still may not show up a defect because you have taken the tension off it, but it's worth a try. It's a hunt and peck method at this point. Good Luck.

I reinstalled my altenator today and I'm wondering if I made the belts too tight. For some reason I'm hearing more of a bearing scraping noise coming out of my passenger air intake. Did I put too much tension on my belts? Is that possible? I simply pulled with my hands and tighten the bolts with a wrench.
