stacy -- do a search on "baum" if you want info/links about purchasing the required ring nut socket rather than fabricating it. I think you could essentially "rent" it by reselling it here (at a discount of course!) so it's a bit of a 50-50 choice IMHO buy-vs-fab. (Call me weird, but personally, I like having a Ferrari steering wheel ring nut socket in my toolbox.)

Thanks for your help. I had trouble logging on so could not get back to you until now. I haven't had a chance to locate or fabricate a tool to get that nut off but I hope to get to it soon and will let you know how it goes. I have only owned this car for two weeks so I am busy tinkering with lots of little things. It has a few little problems including what I think is a problem with position 1 on the fuse box. I will probably deal with that next. I also have what seems to be a common problem of high water temp in traffic. New thermostat, fans working, no air in system.

Thanks again for your helpful info.

Stacy, How did you make out with the horn wire problem?

Stacy, You caught me at the right time. I had my steering wheel off just the other day. As you can see the nut that holds the wheel on has 4 slots. I took a 1&3/4" socket and cut it down with a cutting wheel on a dremel drill. Across the open end of the socket I fashioned 2 tips across from each other that stick down far enough in the nut slots and used a 1/2" extension and rachet to remove the nut. Remove the nut,now the steering shaft is exposed with a countersunk hole in the center of it. Brace your knees under the steering wheel pushing it towards you and use a hammer along with your center punch and tap in that countersunk hole "lightly." With the pressure on the wheel from your knees it will pop off. There is a key slot in there and it only goes on one way so you can't make a mistake there. Remove the wheel and the wire is exposed along with the turn signal cam. To reinstall simply push the wheel back on replace the nut and tighten. If you can't make a tool Snap On or another tool dealer may have one.

The horn recently stopped working on my 78 308 gtb. There was no current at the air pump so I removed the switch from the steering wheel. The problen was the wire leading into the steering column which was broken off at the connector inside the column. Has anyone had to repair this? I guess you would have to pull the steering wheel to get at the area in question.
