The 308 uses a special clutch which I understand is only available from Ferrari. When activated, it pushes out instead of the normal clutch that is moved towards the compressor. If your old one is thrown away, count on about US$200 to buy one from a Ferrari dealer.

My magnetic clutch on the ac compressor failed and was replaced as a complete unit in an ac shop. The York compressor fits and works well using freon but the magnetic clutch is a double pulley instead of the single. The end result is the ac belt touches the alternator. Problem is the shop threw out my old compressor and clutch and the Ferrari agent has no stock of 308 parts. Can any body help with ac magnetic clutch part numbers or compatibles? thanks!

On my 77 308GTB you can easily get to them if you take the right gas tank out and remove the front right inner fender well. They run inside the frame rail and it's a straight shot from behind the gas tank to the fender well. One suggestion is to attach the new hose to the end of the old one and pull them thru together as you remove the old one. Worked great on the heater and vacuum lines on the other side.

It should go the same way as the heater hose and brake booster hose: down under the passenger's side door sill and up behind the front wheel well. Only easily accessible with that side gas-tank out and the aluminum panel off.

Does anyone know where the A/C hoses go from the compressor to the front of the car on a 308. Do you have to remove the belly pan to get at the hoses. Steve

A/C COMPRESSOR INTERCHANGE
DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THE NAPA YORK AC COMPRESSOR PART NUMBER 258018 DISCUSED IN FERRARI ARCHIVES TO FIT ON A 1978, 308 IS THE CORRECT UNIT FOR LATER MODLES I HAVE AN 84 MONDIAL CAB.QV WHICH USES THE SAME DRIVE TRAIN AS THE QV 308"S. MY COMPRESSOR MADE SOME STRANGE NOISES TODAY THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR I TURNED IT ON. I EXPECT IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED SOON AND I DON"T WANT TO GO TO FERRARI.
THANKS

I do not recommend switching a 308 over to R-134 for these reasons. R-134 uses higher operating pressures than R-12 and can lead to hose failure. R-134 has smaller molecules and will leak out faster than R-12 especially if you already have a leak. You will need to increase the air movement through the condenser to hold the pressures down such as making both radiator fans run with the A/C on or by adding more efficient fans. R-134 is not as efficient as R-12 and after all is said and done it just does not work as well. To change it over you will need to have compressor seals that are R-134 compatable, replace all the "O" ring connections with new seals, Replace the drier and expansion valve, and flush the system and install new compatable oil plus new fittings to install the freon. I just do not believe it is cost efficient.

I've got the same problem, I have just done a timing belt job on my car. There was no freon in the system so we took the compressor off. I need to get a new dryer, Rutlands wants $88.00. Should I ask them for a dryer which will support 134 and just fill my compressor with 134 oil and load 134, or is there more to it. It will be hot here in New Orleans soon. Driving with the roof off is not an option. Any help on this conversion would be appreciated.

A drier for a Honda Accord fit my 82 308. Bolted right up and worked like a charm. I still use r-12 because I have access to it and it works better and on lower pressures. Let me know if you need a part# or any other info. A/C is one of my specialties.

My '82 308 with AC has long since lost all the freon. Is switching to R134a a worthwhile investment? A previous thread states that it doesn't cool as well.

Also, is the conversion a DIY 'nuts and bolts' job, or is it more complex? A shop job? I know the compressor is NAPA, and a new dryer (as below) will be required as well. Thanks!

The stock AC compressor for the 308 is an Italian varity of a YORK compressor. You can buy the York replacement at a NAPA store under part # 258018 and it costs about $150. Check out the oil in it before you mount it and if you want make sure it is the daul compatable oil that can be used for Freon 12 (old expensive stuff) or the new 134A. If you convert to 134A you need a new receiver/dryer (T. Rutland can get you a exact replacement ($80)and you can buy this stuff in the small 1LB cans for $7. Good luck Steve

My a/c is not working and I think that my compressor is bad? Is it hard to change? Isn't there a replacement compressor (ac delco?) other than a Ferrari compressor? Thanks.
