I have the Stebro test pipe on my car with the stock muffler. NO problems, great sound (deeper), faster revving up, and it did have both the O2 sensor and thermocouple bungs. It was a good move. Stebro calls their test pipe a "euro resonator" because it isn't quite a straight-through pipe... it has a small expansion chamber that has webbing and some stainless steel wool. It keeps the sound from being as harsh as many straight-through pipes are. And yes, as Tommy says, there is more exhaust smell at idle, but it was a great upgrade. Easy to do, too, and I don't otherwise do much work on my own. Just backed the car up on ramps, loosened the old bolts/nuts (one nut wouldn't loosen even after letting penetrant soak in overnight and I had to use a dremel tool and cutting wheel to get it off) and swap out the cat for the tube. I did replace the nuts and bolts with new stainless steel ones while keeping the original bolt "springs" and collars. You'll also want to get replacement donut gaskets -- Stebro had a much better price on them than the dealer.

I have a tubi and a test pipe. I ran the Tubi and a cat for about 6 months. The biggest difference I noticed once the cat came off was more low pitched rumble at lower rpm that the Tubi alone didn't give me. My only complaint is the smell. I have the strongest exhaust smell that you could imagine. I have checked and adjusted the CO till the cows came home but it is still there. I can also shoot a pretty impressive fireball when I am running her really hard |

I have been toying with the idea of removing the cat on my car and installing test pipes. My reasoning for wanting to remove the cat is because of the excessive heat, the hazard of having a fire, and to make the car run and sound better. My main concern is that of the O2 sensor, but I believe the Stebro test pipes have a fitting for the O2 sensor, so this appears to be a mute point. My other concern is that of the sound level of the car without the cat. I would appreciate any input from other 308 owners who want to comment on the pros and cons of not having a cat. |
