Hi Everyone, Greetings from New York - I'm on business from Europe. Thanks for the feedback. Just for interests sake, do any of you know if the standard item comes painted? DAVE: I own an Alfa, but luckily it's down in South Africa where the dry climate means that my 1980 Spider is absolutely rust free. I understand that European owners are not that lucky! JOHN: I did not remove the silencer - I bought it on e-Bay to replace the cat-converter that was fitted to my European specification 328 by a previous owner. I will probably ask a mechanic to do the replacement for me as the piece is HEAVY! TOMMY: In the e-Bay advert it was advertised as being 44 lbs in weight, but I'm sure it's more than that! I had to transport it back home by aeroplane...and was unable to smuggle it onboard as hand luggage! See picture here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/174013/212441.html?1048609030 Regards, MARK |

Mark - did you notice that the muffler is the heavest muffler on the planet? If nothing else a Tubi will lighten the car about 10lbs. |

Hi Mark - How easy is/was it to fit/remove the standard exchaust? Can you do it without removing the bumper? Hi David - Did you install the Tubi yourself? If so, ditto for the Tubi :-). Many thanks. |

If it weren't stainless there's no way it would have been good enough to clean to the finish you show....have a look behind any 6 month old Alfa Romeo and see how rusty the rear box looks. I vote stainless |

Hi Dave, If it's stainless steel, that's great...I will leave it unpainted. Let's see if someone out there knows for sure! Regards, MARK |

Mark, the lack of rust tells me it is made of some sort of stainless steel. I just installed a Tubi, and my exhaust looks somewhere in between what your pictures show. Mine is a USA car, with single (big) inlet. |

In an earlier thread you will see that I recently bought a used Ferrari silencer for my 1986 European 328 GTS: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/212428.html?1046818004 This is what it looked like when I bought it:
Today I burned a little "elbow grease" and cleaned up the tarnished silencer with a wire brush. It now looks like this:
The silencer needs more cleaning, but I like the raw metal look that it currently has. QUESTION: What material is the slencer made of? That is, will it rust if I leave the metallic surface exposed just like it is right now, or should I have it painted in order to protect it? When I was cleaning it I noticed that it had previously been sprayed with (what appeared to be) grey primer. QUESTION: Are new Ferrari 328 silencers sold painted or unpainted? If painted, what colour are they (grey primer)? If the recommendation is that I should paint the silencer then I would like to get the colour right. Thanks for your help, MARK |
