pepboys has a pump that screws onto the larger container of their generic gear fluid...I used the cheap generic stuff on my renault and when the container was empty filled the large container with the good stuff and pumped it into the transfer gear hole... |

John D. -- Yes, but your terminology is a bit strange -- fill at the transfer gear fill hole until the oil level in the main gearbox comes up to the bottom of the main gearbox fill hole (i.e., 'til it starts to run out of the main gearbox fill hole -- assuming the chassis is level). |

The clutch fill hole is much easier to access. Can I just fill it from there & keep an eye on the transfer fill hole? |

John, Raise the back and the front. Make sure the car is level once the car is on jack stands. Drain the gearbox and the clutch housing gearbox oil. Then plug the clutch housing and gearbox drain plugs. Go to the local fish store or Home Depot and get about 4ft of clear hose and feed the tube into the transfer gear fill hole. BTW, connect a funnel on the other end. Slowly pour (the cavities are connected) gearbox oil until you see oil coming out of the gearbox fill plug. This is the indication that you have enough oil in both the gear box and clutch housing. Make sure you replace all copper washers. Any questions? |

328 Gear Oil Change - Is there an easier way? Can you just "pour" all 4 liters of gear oil in the top of the clutch housing (by a frekin' IV line)? I read somewhere that you could. It's darn near impossible to fill/add fluid into the differental inspection plug without special pump tools. And that Mobile 1 smells awful on the garage floor. Does the clutch-oil circulate with/to the differental box so you can just fill it all from the clutch? Will the clutch get fed the proper level of fluid from the differental through a mechanical action? Lastly, since you have to jack up the back of the car to get under it, one can not check the fluid level properly without a lift. Is it better to have added more fluid than specified or less? After all of that work, I just hate to take the car anywhere else just to check the level. I added .5L through the clutch and 3.5L through the inspection plug via a 20cc hypodermic (+ a small bottle of GM Limited Slip additive recommended to me by a few mechanics). I still can not feel fluid with my finger through the inspection hole. This job really sux. Any advice is appreciated. I had forgotten 3 years ago that I swore not to do this job again. Awwwhhh! |
