Mike: I had an 82 308GTSi (Euorpean). 2 of the standoffs were broken at the headers. 3 of the shield mounting bolts had snapped off in the standoffs. I replaced the missing standoffs and had a machinist remove the bolt stubs (could be drilled out and retapped). I replaced the broken shields with new ones fabricated from .035" stainless steel sheet. They are heavier and not as thermodynamically efficient as the aluminum/asbestos (fiberglass?)/aluminum sandwich but they should hold up better. If I do it again, I might use a lighter gage stainless. The stainless can be given a very nice, permanent polish. Use a lot of penetrating oil before putting a wrench on the shield mounting bolts then loosen with a very, very light touch, adding penetrating oil at every opportunity. Replace with stainless bolts, silver antisieze compound and body washers on both sides of the shield. Tom |
