Mike:
I had an 82 308GTSi (Euorpean). 2 of the standoffs were broken at the headers. 3 of the shield mounting bolts had snapped off in the standoffs. I replaced the missing standoffs and had a machinist remove the bolt stubs (could be drilled out and retapped). I replaced the broken shields with new ones fabricated from .035" stainless steel sheet. They are heavier and not as thermodynamically efficient as the aluminum/asbestos (fiberglass?)/aluminum sandwich but they should hold up better. If I do it again, I might use a lighter gage stainless. The stainless can be given a very nice, permanent polish. Use a lot of penetrating oil before putting a wrench on the shield mounting bolts then loosen with a very, very light touch, adding penetrating oil at every opportunity. Replace with stainless bolts, silver antisieze compound and body washers on both sides of the shield.

My car has cracks on these shields that I believe are the cause of the "buzzing" noise I hear when driving the car. How difficult is it to remove these?. I was thinking about then wrapping with exhaust fabric tape. Anybody care to help out by commenting? Thanks in advance.
