I picked up the solinoid today and perfect match. Brand is WAI. Shop said better qaulity than ACE and they build many parts for Bosch. Don't know anything more than that. But for $38 I'll try it. If the starter acts up again I'll replace the armature. |

Hi again Mr. White, If I may ask, where were you able to locate the OEM Bosch solenoid for $38? Thanks,
Carl |

Got a OEM bosch solinoid for $38. However, the repair shop I got it from did not think the problem was the solinoid and suspected the armature. Apparently Bosch has problems with the welds coming apart on the armature. The tech found one wind that looked like the weld had seperated. This will appear as a "hot start problem" because if the starter stops on the bad winding when hot the starter will not turn. I can have them order a replacement armature for $187. I thought I would try the new solinoid for a while then if the problem ever surfaced again replace the armature. If I replace the armature I'll post pictures because he was kind enough to show me the visisual checks for a bad armature. He's seen many Bosch starters with this problem he said but agreed that if the starter is out of the car you should replace the solinoid as well. |

Yes, very successfully. I installed it on my TR in ~April 2002 (sans the little spring-loaded keeper) and it's worked perfectly (I still owe Ben L. for that suggestion): http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/19944.html |

>>>Bosch PN number might be since that's the same Bosch solenoid that used on the TR (which cross-references to the Ace Electric 7-851). << Have you used the ACE replacement succesfully? |

No problem Carl -- sometimes the stamping of the numbers can be fairly illegible, and on that particular solenoid they didn't make it easy to deduce the 10 digit Bosch PN structure. I had the advantage of knowing what the Bosch PN number might be since that's the same Bosch solenoid that's used on the TR (which cross-references to the Ace Electric 7-851). |

Hi Mr. White, Here's a picture of the failed solenoid from my 1988 328:
Stamping on side reads: GERMANY 0331 S03032 -532 12V then there's a few numbers below that I can't quite make out (poor imprint) ends in "844"? Interestingly, doesn't say "Bosch" anywhere on solenoid itself. Starter (with solenoid) is part #120967. Does not appear to be disassemble-able (crimped edges) Hope this helps. Similar symptoms with my car; can't help with removal performed as part of 30K by dealer.
Carl

Ferrari usually doesn't separate the starter solenoid from the starter motor with its own F PN. There should be a Bosch 10 digit PN stamped into the solenoid outer case that you could either buy from a Bosch source (or cross reference to an Ace Electric solenoid -- my preference). Alternatively, the discount F parts suppliers (e.g., Rutlands, FPsEx, etc.) have already done this themselves so they can probably supply the solenoid separately. |

Also does anyone have the part number for the solinoid? |

I think I have a solenoid problem. When car is hot no starter, no sound, no dimming of dash lights when key turned to start position. I would like to confirm this before ordering a new solinoid for my Mondial 3.2 (as I doubt these can be repaired?). From looking at the wiring diagrams it appears that could be the only possible explination. If it were a starter motor seems the dash lights would dim when turned to start. Pinion always engauges if starter turns. When it cools off works every time. Do you guys agree? Also can this be replaced without removing headers or other major components? Thanks, Bill |
