Henry, Yes it is! I have a complete backup exhaust system just in case I have problems with the one that's on the car now. I bought on eBay (I think from a F-chatter) for $250 and it only had been used for 8K KMS. Joe

Joe: There is NO mixing of the gases from the two sides, in the muffler. The center three chambers act only as transfer sites for the tubes. My plan is to put the muffler back together, with MIG welding, and see how it sounds, with the cutout precats, and straight pipes, instead of the cats. I also have a Tubi exhaust, which I will try in place of the stock exhaust, and see which I like. Nice to have choices!!!!!! |

Henry, Yes, the cats were removed. It is hard to tell from the photo whether the pipes from each bank routes directly through to the tips. If I see what I think I see, both banks mix in the middle of the muffler anyway. I know backpressure is created by the muffler for the motor chambers to be neutral in pressure during the 4 cycles. I am by no means an expert on exhaust system so I would hope somebody here could better answer your question on that. Joe

Jeff: Good luck on your search. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm looking at a Miura, that I "really" like. |

Joe: I assume that the Ford cats where removed. Did you end up with just plain "empty" tubes, with nothing else inside? If I remove the baffles, the exhaust from each bank will mix in the muffler......I don't know what that will do. I think it would be better to have each bank go it's own route, to the exhaust tips.......not really sure yet on what I will do. |

Henry, I had my Euro-spec mufflers split while replacing the clutch last spring. I heard a "clunking" noise when I removed them to get at the clutch housing. I thought maybe some baffles had come loose. I took them to a shop to split them and possibly re-weld the baffles in place. When the shop called me and said you need to come down here and see this before we proceed, I went down. Low and behold there was a Ford OEM catalytic canister in each of them and nothing else! No baffles like yours, (keep in mind the Euro spec TR's had two separate mufflers) so I had them welded back up and the sound and performance boost was incredible. They had to have been put there when the car was imported in 1988 and I always passed the emissions test with them in there and now I do not. Oh well. I think that as long as the re-welded outer wall material is thick enough, you could cut out all the baffles without any problems and get a different sound as well as a performance boost. IMO Joe

Henryk, great to see someone working on their own car. You have my two favorite Ferraris. Someday soon (need a larger garage) I am going to have to decide between the two and it is going to be very difficult. Too bad you aren't closer! Re the muffler, it might be interesting if you could fit a Power Effects muffler (http://www.powereffects.com/tech.htm) in its place. This could allow you to tune the sound volume very easily with just the turn on a lever. |

Jeff: The 6 baffles you see are solid, except where they allow the pipes to go through. The exhaust comes in and goes right up against a solid baffle.....the gas then routes back, in the chamber.....through another pipe that goes back, then across the whole muffler, to the other side......then out the back. A LOT of curves.......rather restrictive, from what I see. |

Wow Henryk...ya know that muffler doesn't look very restrictive. Like you, I have considered using two smaller mufflers in place of the stock big one. Or one big high performance cross-flow type, but I couldn't find one like that. I've even considered using late model Corvette C5 mufflers. On the vette these are at the outer rear corners. But I don't see any reason why they couldn't be flipped around for the TR. I've asked some Vette vendors for actual dimensions but thus far have not heard anything. I'll probably have to find a Vette and just measure them myself. Since you've gone to all the trouble, you may as well do some mods in there. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say. |

Well, I just finished opening up the TR stock muffler.......just a bunch of tubes and baffles. I am trying to increase the sound of the car, while possibly using the stock muffler. my options are: cut some holes in the baffles, weld back the covers, and install on car. or, I can use the frame as a template, and weld two small mufflers between the appropriate pipes, then remove the rest of the muffler, and end up with two small mufflers, fit to size. Any opinions, or suggestions? |
