Re: Contact Cleaner and Enhancer

The best for electronics: There are two.

1) Stabilant 22. Can be found at NAPA, and VW dealers. About $50 for a small bottle, but should last a long time.

2) Deoxit. Can be found at radioshack. Much cheaper (I think I paid less than $10). Website is www.caig.com

I have purchased the deoxit, and I swear this stuff is miracle juice. Works wonders on Italian Electronics. Much cheaper than the old standby Stabilant 22. Caig products claims that deoxit not only cleans, but enhances electrical connections.

Both of these have been used by the Alfa community for years with positive results.

Hope this helps.

Matt, I did say that I was advised. Notice that I did not try to take credit for myself. :-)

Russ, I cannot remember the brand (it's at home now and I am at work) but I bought it at Pep Boys, I think and it is labeled "Electrical Contact Cleaner" as the product name. I am sure that any similar product would work.

I just went through this myself last week. Here are the steps:

1. Pop the switch off the armrest using a flat headded screwdriver.

2. Note the postion of all of the cables then pull them all off the switch

3. Carefully remove the rectangular trim piece that goes around the switch

4. Dissasemble the switch by carefully poping the plastic rocker button (the one you press to open and close the windows). This can be done by prying the switch apart with a small flat headded screwdriver.

5. Once you remove the rocker switch take note of how everything goes assembled. Chances are you will see that one or more of the inernal contacts in the switch are black from the power arcing. Clean all the contacts using fine sandpaper, steel wool or a scouring pad. Clean it until it is good and shiny.

6. While in there take the two springs in the rocker switch and stretch them a little by hand to increase their tension.

7. Reassemble the switch using dielectric grease (available at any auto parts or electronic store)on all the contacts.

8. Re-install and it should be as good as new.

Good luck with the project.

The same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago with my 87 Mondial 3.2. I was advised to spray contact cleaner into the switch. I had to remove 2 screws in the front ash tray and the shift gate to get the console to release enough to get the little straw into the switch.

After a generous spraying from both sides and the top and while working the switch on and off to get the cleaner down into it, voila... it worked.

The window started working again.

That was a quick and easy fix. Hopefully you can do the same and it will fix the problem.

If it's like a 328 there is a fuse for each door's switches.

The passenger side window switch has decided not to work :-( Any tricks I should troubleshoot before buying a new switch and taking the armrest, etc. apart?
