You have a carb car so be sure your mechanic understands that your whole engine may be affected. When I got an SS system for my Lotus, my guy just used all factory settings and it ran like crap. I had to do a lot of tweaking with the timing and flow, plus fight an annoying backfire that my mechanic should have delt with himself. But now I can say it's well worth it for the sound and hp.

Hi Russ, I found the tubi with test pipes to be too loud and too harsh on my 308 QV so I installed the Stebro resonators. Made the car sound way better. I was curious afterward if the Stebro muffler would have sounded better than the tubi.

I saw Norwood racing headers and exhaust on Ebay not too long ago and was wondering if any of you knew anything about that. Could it flow too freely?

As mentioned in previous threads, I have ordered a 'European Resonator' from the friendly people (Dan) at Stebro to replace the cat prior to Tubi. It is a steel wool baffled 'test pipe' (high tech 'cherry bomb' for you nostalgia buffs)that takes some of the harshness out of the straight pipe sound while maintaining significantly increased straight pipe flow. At least that's the story. Also has attatchments for temp and O2 sensor.
Anyone else try this? Anyway, just another option to consider.

Thermo tec makes a muffler with an internally adjustable baffle for sound tuning. You change the angle at which the sound hits the plate. Its not on their website, but I know they make them. They're compact, too.

If you look in the archives I built a 308 flowmaster exhaust which sounds awesome and a noticeable difference in performance......

Peter: I am doing just the same thing with my TR. After numerous suggestions, I have decided that it would be impossible to decide on the sound that I wanted, from their opinions. So I have decided on the following; First; gut out the pre-cats. Second; replace the cats with straight pipes. Third; replace the stock exhaust with Tubis. Fourth; replace the Tubis with after-market mufflers.

The cost would start from minimal!....and you would have total control of the sound.

What good would it be to spend $2500, and then to find out the sound you want is just not there?

My mechanic would like to build a custom-tuned exhaust for my '77 308. At present, it has the factory exhaust. I am after a specific sound Vs the extra power (which I have enough of...for me). If you have seen the Hamlet Ferrari video (Cigar commercial) that has the guy in the TR (I think it was a TR) getting is head whacked with the crossing arm while hitting his head on the horn each time he gets whacked, that is the sound I am after. My mechanic has yet to download the video and get back to me. The sound was higher pitched Vs the 'throaty' stock exhaust.

If I can get this high-pitch rev sound (and some extra power), what should I expect to pay? My mechanic says he would do 'one trick setup' for about $2500. I am in great respect of his capability to deliver a top-notch exhaust and the money is not a great concern, but I have no experience in regard to what is out there in the market and what FCar owners are adding to replace factory exhaust setups. Please excuse any venacular I used that was not 'proper' in regard to my question. I am not an exhaust expert! :-)
