The plates do have some "ribbing" on them for strength but no braces. They just bolt up to the car. They do have sort of half moon cut-outs to clear the tank supports towards the front of the car. I think there are 3. You can probbaly see those in your parts manual. Tom. |

Thank You Tom...that's exactly what I needed to know. My tank straps do still have the padding on them. So I guess I'm good to go. I used fairly heavy gage steel, like about 16 or 18 gage. Kinda heavy but it's all I had at the moment. It was a bear making it as the shear in our shop is only 52 inches wide. So I had to saw the darn thing. Very floppy and hard to handle till I whittled it down a bit. Do the plates have any recesses or shapes, or even braces attached to make them more rigid? |

On the TR's that I have worked on, they have all had one piece protection plates, with foam padding glued to the tank straps. The foam padding is slightly wider than the tank strap. I asume they put the padding so the protection plate does'nt vibrate against the tank straps. The plates I have seen have all been sheet metal. Maybe a 20 gauge? Not to thick anyways. Tom |

My car did not have the protection plate that covers the fuel tanks and pumps. What I would like to know is: What is the plate made of...aluminum or steel? And secondly, is there some type of rubber padding or foam cushion on the side that goes against the tanks? I made a cardboard template, and made a plate using sheet steel. I then undercoated both sides, and bolted it up. All looks good except I fear the it will make noise due to vibrations from the road as well as the engine. I plan on putting a thin foam padding on the tank-side. From what I can tell in the parts manual, the plate can be one piece or 3 pieces. I made mine the hard way - as one big stinking piece. All help is truly appreciated. Thanks. |
